Concerned mum - tummy pains (mainly in evening)

Concerned mum here.....

After summer my 7 year old son started complaining of stomach pains. He wasn't sick but had diarrhea. At first it was every 3 weeks however in December it's become more frequent and on a couple of occasions he has vomited. After he has vomited he feels absolutely fine and the stomach pain goes away.

I took him to A&E as one day I was called to PIck him up from school. He had a high temperature and obviously being concerned that his tummy was sore again I went up to the hospital. They wanted to take bloods, however, because he was so distressed and showed signs of a red throats and red ear they said it wasn't necessary if he was going to get so upset and said we could leave.

Since then we have had several occasions were he is unwell towards the end of the day/during the night.
I went to the GP and he has now been referred however the NHS waiting list for paediatrics is over 3 months. I am hoping to go private but with all the festive malarkey it's been hard to arrange an appointment.

During the day he is absolutely happy and bouncing around. He is being wary with what he eats incase he is getting a sore tummy.

It's hard not to google. My anxiety is through the roof and I've read the C word numerous times. Ridiculous I know!!!! I need some words of positivity to tell me to calm down, wait until the doctor sees him and then panic if needs be (so hard to do!! I'm thinking the worst scenario).

DS is also panicking at the thought of bloods now. He was diagnosed with HSP 2 years ago (vasculitis) however we know it isn't related as no joint pain.

He tells me his throats is funny which is making me think acid reflux as he is lying down at night for it to be worse.

Has anyone had similar experiences or can they share some insightful information??

I've decided if he is unwell again over next two nights I'm going straight to A&E again.

My ds1 was like this aged two and he ended up being intolerant to dairy and gluten. He would be sick one day per week or fortnight and be fine in between, but got lethargic and achy legs and we then dsicovered that he was anaemic too. Once we took him off dairy and gluten (one by one with support from the dietician), he was like a new boy. We were concerned about leukaemia whilst waiting for the bloods to come back because he seemed so poorly, but it was down to food. The only thing, on top of reflux meds, that helps ds is a good probiotic from Biocare (we use Mindlinx). The paediatrician suggested it, although he said evidence at this stage is anecdotal, but it appears to have helped. Have you propped him up? Ds sleeps with three pillows (and still has reflux and another gastro condition - if only we knew when he was small and refusing to eat!)

Do not rule out vasculitis, throat and tummy symptoms are possible and joint pain not always present. Does he attend a specialist vasculitis clinic?

Justquery · 01/01/2018 08:25

Thank you for your replies everyone.
I have an appointment mid January with a allergy specialist.
we were dismissed from the hospital for vasculisis around a year ago as When he had flare ups it was once a year and no urine in his protein throughout the year.

I know he has to get bloods taken but he is obviously very concerned about this and keeps panicking. Last time he did they didn't use the numbing cream!

Last night was a good night and he slept right through. I feel refreshed!!! I'm now trying to think what he can eat today that won't upset him. We are italian which makes the cutting out wheat hard!!

Dd2 was like this, send home from school many times, the GP sent her to A&E on more than one occasion.

With her it was anxiety, abdominal migraines.

I wouldn't cut anything as major as wheat out of his diet without checking with the GP first. If you can persuade him bloods aren't as bad as all that they can check for coeliac/other allergies with the blood test. However if you've cut wheat out already then it won't show up, I believe.

I think you might need to try to rule out the more common complaints like threadworms before going back to A&E. Has he had a stool culture?

Justquery · 01/01/2018 12:34

I am going to get stool samples this week and il push for the bloods.
Not cut wheat out at all, being careful with dairy because my osteopath told
Me to not give as much until I have my appointments with her.
Thanks for the replies everyone!

Would abdominal migraines give diarrhoea?

I had similar symptoms and I've now been diagnosed with crohn's disease. I had no idea that my sore throat (ulcers) would have anything to do with my stomach. Pre diagnosis I used to get hungry very quickly, but I couldn't eat anything until I'd been sick, this got the nausea out the way until I could eat something.
I've recently done the fodmap elimination diet which was hard but worth it for me, showed a sensitivity to things like onion and garlic which are fermenting and cause bloating.
Definitely a food diary would be a good first step towards finding common themes!

treeofhearts · 01/01/2018 15:27

It sounds like some kind of allergy to me. Keep a food diary. Absolutely everything he eats and drinks and how much and how he is that evening. Then after a week look for the common denominator. Cut out obvious allergens. Start with dairy and gluten. They're the most staple foods and are usually had every day so more likely to be the culprit.

TheInimitableMrsFanshawe · 01/01/2018 17:53

My DS has recently been diagnosed with coeliac disease. It sounds similar. Please make sure that you don’t start cutting out wheat and gluten until this has been ruled out, he needs to be eating gluten for it to be picked up.

C for Constipation which can give diarrhoea as overflow from a blockage
