Splinter SOS

millymollymandy46 · 27/12/2017 12:19

My 11 year old stepped onto a splinter yesterday in the heel of his foot - and is in agony as I try to get it out - have tried soaking foot, the needle, the tweezers (and the overnight - it will work its way out).
Not a hospital thing but...any tips. It has gone in really deep.
Thank you.

I'm sure there is something you can do with a plastic syringe to sook it out but can't remember exactly. Like a calpol syringe with end cut off and plunger pulls out to sook it out??

This is a valid reason to go to a walk in centre.

Try numbing it with an ice cube, then a needle and tweezers.

If that doesn’t work, you’ll have to go to the walk in centre.

I saw a brilliant thing where a mother takes a calpol/nurofen dispensing syringe Jong and places the little hole of the syringe over the bit of the splinter closest to the skin and pulls on the syringe plunger (as if you're sucking the medicine out of the bottle). If it's in deep you might need to open the top layer of skin with a sterilised needle.

Poor kid, hope they're sorted soon.

Jong Hmm *thing.

Thank you!!!!! Will try all. And now I know what a Jong is! Will let you know. Ice cube idea a good one.

You could try some Magnesium Sulphate paste to draw it out.

Thank you very much to everyone. Huge splinter just came out half an hour ago with...more soaking in warm water and TCP, the ice cube and then pressing with the jong which was brilliant, more hygenic than my talons and seemed more professional to my very unappreciative patient. Respect to all paramedics, nurses and medics out there who deal with patients in pain needing painful remedies. Had bicarb standing by, thanks MissMuriel but luckily not required. I love Mumsnet. Have a lovely evening everyone. It was a massive one that had gone upwards into his foot and deeply in - so I can actually now see why he was screaming so much everytime I went near him....

Awww ouch. I would clean with hydrogen peroxide as it is an anerobic wound?
