What do you do if your child has croup? 4 year old...

My DD had it recently. We went to walk in centre, they issued steroids to help with breathing.

We used lots of pillows at nightime, its awful and it was really hurting her.

Thank you for replying. It's awful, DD had it about 3 weeks ago and we took her to walk in for medicine. We've had her in steamy bathroom and she's calmed down and stopped coughing. Don't know whether to take her for meds or not... it takes almost an hour to get there.

The advice in olden days was to put child in a steamy bathroom to help with breathing.

It's horrible. My son always gets a 'barky' cough, has done since he was little, so by the the time I'd recognised he actually had croup the first time, he had stridor. He was just a wee toddler and it was awful. We had to take him to the hospital and it took two doses of steroids to sort. I wouldn't hang about if it's not improving. A cold air humidifier is useful, my son's 8 now and it still helps if he gets a cough.

Either steamy or cold crisp air worked for my kids. Also honey, if they will take it as it soothes the throat a bit.

Cold air works much better than steam - wrap her up and take her outside.

Ideally to get the steroid. With the windows down in the car (put loads of blankets over her) she’ll improve massively anyway

Two of my children has recently had croup, very scary.
They both had a dose of steriods and was better very quickly afterwards.
Apparently NHS tells you now that steam is not recommended as there is no evidence it works.

My DS used to get it v badly but has largely grown out of it now (8yrs). I'd take your D'S to hospital. We always received excellent, sympathetic care.
