Will chicken pox be gone by Christmas?

I have 3 dc and was under the impression all of them have and chicken pox. But bloody hell they must have got off lightly. Poor 5yo ds is absolutely covered and is really quite poorly with it. He had the first few spots yesterday morning and they just keep coming. He felt ok yesterday but today is very feverish and sleepy and very very poxy. The blisters look so painful. How long before he's likely to feel better? We're not planning on seeing too many people over Christmas so I'm not worried about infecting anyone, but I'm thinking we should postpone dinner til he's up to enjoying it? He's the one who probably enjoys a roast the most, so might swap all the buffet food we have around and have that in the day instead. I realise chicken pox happens to everyone but I can't believe what a bad case of it he seems to have, is there anything that could help him that I've not thought of? I have piriron and calpol, and also aqueous cream with calamine in. I'm trying to keep his fluids up but he doesn't really want anything. How long is it likely to be til he's at least comfortable if not better?

Some people with chickenpox may develop shingles later in life. This is a painful, blistery rash caused by the chickenpox virus becoming reactivated

From NHS website.

You can and do catch shingles from CP You only can get shingles if you have had CP

Look it up! I also didn't believe it. Beware anyone who has had CP and is now preggers or with low immune system.

My son has it now although he's on the mend. The oat baths were really the only thing that gave him relief, just make sure the water is only just body temp and don't 'wash' him just get him to recline in the bath. My son was really poorly for about 3 days, high temp and lethargic. He's on day 8 now.

Are you sure it isn’t measles? Just thinking with the spots in the mouth and how bad it looks, it could be a possibility. Hope he perks up soon.

Rotorevolution · 23/12/2017 20:08

Ignore my last comment, the rash wid be different.

Vinorosso74 · 23/12/2017 20:15

I also had chicken pox as an adult ( same time as DD) and I swear by the instant relief Poxclin gave!

Oywotchadoin · 23/12/2017 20:18

Gosh that looks so sore. I think of cases like this when people scoff at the vaccine.

SloanePeterson · 23/12/2017 20:22

Definitely chicken pox, we took him to out of hours today when his temp wouldn't come down. So worrying, we have to keep an eye on him and take him in if it gets to 39, it's been hovering at 38,5 today. They did say he's got a very bad case of it. He seemed a little cooler when we put him to bed but I'm afraid the itch is setting in so it'll definitely be oaty baths and lots of the poxclin tomorrow. I'm worried about infection now as they said a spike in temp will be the first sign, and several of his spots have a horrible black scab on them.

Oywatchadoin, it's absolutely heartbreaking. I can feel the spots through his pjs and every time I touch him it hurts him. I'd definitely be in favour of a vaccine if I were offered it in future, I cannot believe how bad a time of it he's having

Poor sausage. I’d go to the docs, there are antivirals which can be given in severe cases.

SloanePeterson · 23/12/2017 20:40

No they have said he's too young for antivirals. There's nothing they can do for him right now, he's just got to ride it out

They’re wrong. www.medicines.org.uk/emc/files/pil.5696.pdf?filename=PIL.5696.pdf

Ah balls. That's rubbish. I'm not sure how helpful they'd be as he's into the third day of symptoms but they were very clear that they'd give them if he was older. I'm not sure I can face taking him again tomorrow. We did the right thing calling 111 I think but I felt so bad taking him somewhere that he could infect others, even when that's what we were told to do. If there's no improvement in the morning I'll reconsider though.

They give valtrex for CP even to 2yos for bad cases. You can see instant results! Give quick call to OOO tomorrow am especially if spots get worse

Rotorevolution · 24/12/2017 11:27

How’s he getting on now OP? Hope he’s over the worst.

SloanePeterson · 24/12/2017 19:23

Thanks for asking Roto. He's actually managed to be up and playing a little today so is definitely on the mend. His temperature got very scary last night but seems back to normal today. The spots are now very dry and sore looking, but with very few fresh blisters left thank goodness, and the oat bath was well recieved. We now have the itch to contend with! He's still not 100% but I think the worst is definately behind us, and I think he'll manage to enjoy tomorrow. Thanks to much everyone for the advice and support, I truly felt out of my depth for a while!

Pleased to hear. Hopefully he'll be a bit better again tomorrow and he'll be able to enjoy his Christmas.

Rotorevolution · 25/12/2017 06:48

Poor boy, he’s seems to have really suffered with it. Hopefully he’ll have a lovely day today xx
