My son started with a fever Friday night which continued into Saturday. Saturday the rash in the photo stated to develop. It began as what I thought was a nappy rash but soon spread to his legs, all over his bum, in his elbow creases and on his hands, ears and a handful on his face. They are raised to the touch. We’ve been to two urgent care centres who have checked his temperature and dismissed it as nothing. It is now peeling. I’ve no idea what to do now. Should I just accept it’s nothing?

It doesn’t look like a measles rash. Measles children tend to have sore sticky eyes, white spots in their mouth, they have a really miserable face and are usually quite unwell.

Same here re HFM.

It was gone after 2 weeks. Nails and skin peeled off after a month also.
Lots of fun.

my granddaughter had the same two weeks ago - hand foot and mouth although she had none inside her mouth or on her feet. Big ugly rash just like in your picture but all over the centre of her face, on the backs of her hands, nappy area and backs of legs. Saw GP, OOH and children's ward. No treatment just to let it run it's course. Spots are fading but not gone yet.

My sons are spreading onto his cheeks now but not at all on his feet yet. He’s not any worse in himself though so I’ll see how he is in the morning. Nails peeling off doesn’t sound much fun at all.

A child I know had a terrible case of HF&M that looked similar- she had spots over her whole body. They said it was a severe case plus her immune system must have been particularly susceptible.

Anatidae · 13/12/2017 12:04

There is an emergent strain of one of the viruses that cause hfm that produces more severe symptoms. When ds has it he was covered - with the exception of his feet and hands. Most odd.

Definitely looks like hand foot and mouth. As well as appearing in the above areas it commonly appears in nappy area and down legs.

Keep up with fluids and it should start to resolve within 5-7 days. It’s highly contagious but most adults have already had it so will be immune.

YUp, have to agree, looks like hfm
My daughter had it two months ago, started as bad nappy rash, spread down backs of legs and behind knees, then went to inside her mouth-check the roof of his mouth with a torch! Then it was round her mouth and on her arms, weirdly it didn’t appear on hands and feet for a good 4-5 days after the first symptoms. She didn’t sleep for 2/3 days!!
Make sure you’ve got cold stuff in, ice polls, chilled juice/water and plenty of calpol. It’s supposed to be a mild illness but my daughter was pretty unwell with it....it’s about 2 months on and her feet are still peeeling and it’s starting to look like her thumb and toe nails will fall off!

My Gd age 3 had a sore throat last week and on Fri came out in a rash had temp really thought it was measles.very sleepy not eating took to docs who thought it was measles test came back negative. Took to see nurse practitioner who said she had chest infection and gave antibiotics . Do not think chest infection. What next

emrich89 · 14/12/2017 22:33

My LG has this exact same thing!! It came around her bum area and her forearms and a couple here and there. She had cold symptoms with it too. The drs had no idea what it was, they did tale swaps to be sure it wasn't anything horrible and gave a course of antibiotics incase it was bacterial. The swabs came back clear and it ended up clearing, so am still unsure what it was! Hope this makes you feel better xx

Hi yes feel better now thought I was going mad or the doctors were. Thank you

Justquery · 21/12/2017 20:01

Have you thought it could be HSP? My son has this and his rashes are on his legs, elbows creases, bum and knees?
