12 month old with hand foot and mouth

DS 12 months has had hand foot and mouth since Friday. His temp was high, but is under control and the blisters seem to be drying now, but he is still completely inconsolable. Sleeping, fitfully and only on us and even then sleep is very disturbed.
It seems to have developed into a blocked nose and cough now too. Is this normal?
We saw an out of hours dr on Sunday night, who simply diagnosed hf&m and couldn’t offer any more advice than to alternate calpol and ibrprofen (which I already knew) We went to dr as I began to fear measles as ds is so bad with it.

Any advice? And how long until I can expect to see him starting to recover?

DD1 had it at 13 months and she was absolutely miserable with it. One night she didn’t sleep. At all. It lasted 4-5 days IIRC.

DD2 had it at 2, she wasn’t so bad but was still pretty miserable.
Paracetamol and ibruprofen as all you can do, I’m afraid!

oldlaundbooth · 28/11/2017 21:15

DD had it at 9 months.

Horrendous. Same as you. She/we didn't sleep for a week.

This too shall pass.

Kezzauk82 · 28/11/2017 21:17

Thanks for your reply Ecureuil
It’s so miserable isn’t it! I just don’t know what to do to help him settle.

We’ve been 4-5 days now so hopefully tomorrow we’ll see an improvement 🤞🏻

My dm keeps saying ‘we didn’t have it when you were small. Is it a new disease?’
Helpful mum, helpful 😂

You are right though oldlaundbooth this too shall pass
And then DD will get it!

Apparently I had it at 18 months and I was in so much pain round my nappy area that I refused to ever wear a nappy again and basically potty trained myself!

Kezzauk82 · 28/11/2017 21:21

Were yours bad with cough/cold after the blisters started to heal? That seems to be what’s bothering him now. He’s currently snoring on my chest

Ha! So not a new disease after all then 👍🏻😂

My two each had HFM around 18 months old and it was definitely the most unwell they have ever been, in terms of general misery and listlessness. Hopefully you’re past the worst now. Funnily they both had impetigo at the same time as HFM, so he’s possibly just a bit vulnerable to other bugs while he’s fighting this one.

makingmiracles · 28/11/2017 21:28

MIne had it a few weeks ago, pretty badly nappy area, backs of legs, face, up her nose and on the roof of her mouth.
The hand and feet Spots didn’t come out for 4-5 days after the initial ones in her nappy area and she didn’t sleep for 2 days straight!!
The whole time she was dribbling and yes had cold type symptoms too.
It’s been about 3ish weeks and now her hands and feet are starting to peel. I’ve been told that about a month afterwards their finger and toe nails can fall off too!!

Sweetpotatoaddict · 28/11/2017 21:29

It's a horrible virus, dd had it 2 months ago and lost some fingernails and her toenails look like they'll go too. The sleeplessness seems normal with it, both mind got cold symptoms afterwards too. Hope he's better soon.

Kezzauk82 · 28/11/2017 21:29

Thanks strawberrie, just reassuring to hear that he isn’t unusual in his reaction to it.
And I did wonder if he’d picked up another virus on top of the hf&m. Hopefully he manages to fight them both off soon

Yes to the nails falling off too about a month later.

Dd's did, so did mine.

Very glamorous.

oldlaundbooth · 28/11/2017 21:30

Skin peeled off feet and hands too.

Very random virus.

Kezzauk82 · 28/11/2017 21:32

Oh god to the toe and fingers nail falling off 😱
I’m glad I’m forewarned on that one!

Thanks for all your replies - glad to hear cold symptoms are normal. DM had me worrying about a chest infection on top of the hf&m!

My ds is at the skin peeling stage now. He was so sore with it and lived off yoghurt and icecream for a few days. It’s a miserable few days but it passes fairly quickly. He just kept rubbing his face on me because he was so sore 😔
Now he has great delight in telling me ‘I picking my toes mummy’ 😊

Kezzauk82 · 28/11/2017 21:38

Yoghurt and weetabix seem to be the food of choice here 👍🏻
Refused the ice cream offered 😱

Seems such a horrible (and random) virus. I’m glad to hear that for DS the end of it maybe in sight!

I work in a Nursery and we've had it going round too. Luckily DS hasn't caught it yet but we've had 5 or 6 that have so far!!! It's not nice but not too serious. It's quite normal for them to feel extremely shitty with it, kinda like flu with the spots and the skin peeling is normal too although kinda gross lol so yep calpol and loads and loads of cuddles hope it passes quick and he feels better soon!!! 💙💙

makingmiracles · 28/11/2017 22:13

Oh by the way, we found the only things that my dd would eat when going through the very worst few days of it, it was watermelon and ice polls (she’s 17 Months)

Sweetpotatoaddict · 28/11/2017 22:44

Someone I know caught it from a child she was babysitting for reckoned it was the most miserable illness ever, and should have been renamed hand foot and fanny Grin
