DD been ill off & on for 3 weeks. This rash has just appeared. She is 8.
I’m waiting for a doctor to call me back. I know it’s hard to speculate but would be grateful for advice.

I'd be very surprised if it wasn't just a viral rash. Mine come out like that usually a few days to a week after a bout of sickness.

ZigZagandDustin · 24/11/2017 14:22

Where on her body is it? Also look a bit like a heat rash.

I wouldn't be worried about that one stalk but I'm not a doc! And I'm not there to see it properly. So do chat to them about it.

But it looks like a viral rash, which if it is is harmless and nothing to be done. Does it feel like sandpaper?

EvilDoctorBallerinaRoastDuck · 24/11/2017 14:23

I immediately thought measles.

LBOCS2 · 24/11/2017 14:23

Is it rough to the touch? And does she have a sore throat? It looks to me like the rashes we all had when we had scarlet fever (which has been doing the rounds recently). If it meets those criteria it may be worth asking your GP/nurse about it as it doesn't always spring to mind for them.

It's really difficult to diagnose rashes from a picture though - you'll probably be sent to the dr.

centreyoursoul · 24/11/2017 14:24

Thank you ... don’t like to bother docs unecessarily but it’s just this is week 3 of horrible virus, starting with cough.
Rashes ... always worried about meningitis...

What area are you in? There is currently a reported epidemic of measles in Liverpool and Leeds. If your child isn't vaccinated it's a possibility.

Do speak to the Dr about it as it's a certifiable condition.

notangelinajolie · 24/11/2017 14:29

Have you tried an anti-hystamine?

ahhhsalmonskinroll · 24/11/2017 14:31

Does it blanch?

centreyoursoul · 24/11/2017 14:36

notangelina they’ve just appeared.

They seem to disappear under glasssalmon but I don’t trust myself.
Not in the North West slim

LBCOs it does feel like fine sandpaper. She says it’s very itchy.

LippyLP · 24/11/2017 14:43

Feels like sandpaper then likely scarlet fever. Easily treated even though it sounds bad. Mention the feel of the rash to Dr. We couldn't sit in waiting room when my daughter had it. She started to feel better after medication. Notify the school too.

ZigZagandDustin · 24/11/2017 14:46

For the record, my DD who always gets a viral rash a few days after being sick, it's always red like your pic, sandpapery and itchy. She's also been give antibiotics for it as the doc thought it was scarlet fever but they made no difference and she gets it so often it's definitely a viral rash.

And it would be scarletina not scarlet fever unless she has a temp.

LapinR0se · 24/11/2017 14:49

Jesus. Please don’t take the advice of strangers off the internet looking at a photo.
I would be straight down the GP with that

ZigZagandDustin · 24/11/2017 14:54

Yes Lapin, same comment from everyone. Go see doc.

centreyoursoul · 24/11/2017 15:01

Doc hasn’t rang me back after 45 mins

You must see a gp - But also read the patient . Co . Uk description of scarlet fever. Our gp hadn’t seen it and it can vary a little. Face should look a bit sunburned if it is. It came up quite quickly over the course of a few hours, starting in the groin and armpits then spread over body. It’s important to get a swab to check and start antibiotics if they think it is.

I caught it mildly from my son; it’s very hot and itchy. It developed into severe tonsillitis with me as I didn’t realise I had it till too late and had been dealing with him. Ours only felt like sandpaper a few days later.

But definitely see someone - try out of hours?

Witchend · 24/11/2017 18:32

For the meningitis rash, it's a late symptom. You'd know because she'd be really ill.
Ds used to get non-fading viral rashes and that's what we were told.

Quartz2208 · 24/11/2017 19:20

Measles/Scarlet Fever or Viral rash - having had a child with a non blanching rash it does not look like that but could be the othere two

Nicae · 24/11/2017 19:33

My vote is Scarlet Fever, both my two had it about 6 months ago and it looked just like that. The older one was poorly for quite a while before the rash came out. They were both put on strong antibiotics for it as it can have some nasty complications so definitely a doctors job I think. Of the other very obvious symptom was they were very tired as well as the red face.

lougle · 24/11/2017 19:46

Nobody can diagnose over the internet, but the characteristic meningitis rash, is a rash that appears underneath the skin, and the reason it doesn't blanch is that it's from blood leaking into the tissues under the skin. That's why it is so striking, and so deep in colour. It doesn't fade away because the blood is trapped in the tissues and has nowhere to go.

With viral rashes, the colour from the rash tends to be superficial, and pressure will divert the blood supply away from the area, so the area will blanch. When you release the glass, blood supply returns, so colour returns.

Please don't focus on her rash - if it was a true, non-blanching septicemic rash, you'd know and be in no doubt that you needed help. Focus on her overall condition, and trust yourself. You know your DD. If she didn't have the rash, would she seem very ill to you, or just a bit off-colour? Would you describe the rash as lacy? Where did it start? Has she had slapped cheek before?

DD3 is 8, and has just had slapped cheek. She had a full body rash, but the doctor said that it is a less usual, but legitimate, presentation of the condition. Her rash seemed to last an age, and left in the order that it appeared.

centreyoursoul · 24/11/2017 21:10

Thank you everyone lougle thank you especially for the explanation giving reasons as to why meningitis rash doesn’t disappear when glass is pressed on the skin.
And the advice regarding focusing on her overall condition.
We saw the gp at about 4pm. He confirmed that it was a viral rash.

As a point of interest, in the time between seeing the rash and sitting in front of our gp, I remembered that she’s eaten quite a lot of strawberries this week (which I didn’t discourage because she’s had very little appetite - I thought at least she’s eating something).

Thank you all very much for taking the time to help. I panicked a bit. Blush

I'm glad you've seen the GP and been reassured. It's always better to be safe than sorry. I hope she feels much better soon Smile
