Gp said chest is clear but STILL coughing after almost 4 weeks

In a nutshell, ds was coughing for two weeks, saw nurse at gp and was given antibiotics, cough eased slightly but didn't go, returned and saw gp after course of antibiotics was finished, was told he sounds clear and that the symptoms of an infection can linger for a few weeks. I asked how long I should let it continue and was told to come back in about a week (that will be beginning of next week)
The cough has gradually got worse again since seeing gp, it is crackly and poor ds is not getting a break from it at all. I can hear some kind of cracking grinding sound from his chest occasionally after he has a coughing fit, I don't know whether he is gulping down air as he coughs and breathes in and that is the reason or whether it is something else? He is struggling to eat due to the cough as it is making him heave/gag. He is asthmatic. He is otherwise well in himself although has black circles under his eyes and has done since this started.
Stick to the gps advice or get him seen sooner? I'm worried about leaving him like this over the weekend.

I'm not a HCP, but DD is asthmatic and she does tend to hang onto coughs longer than some kids. I think the airways can get a bit inflamed and take a while to go down again, which leaves them a bit vulnerable if the next cold comes along before they're fully recovered. She's better able to fight things off since having the brown steroid inhaler. Does he have a brown inhaler or just the blue preventer?

If his chest is clear then it may be a case of his asthma being less well controlled than usual during winter bug season. I'd go back to the GP or asthma nurse, and ask about a review of his asthma meds.

He has both, dark brown inhaler and blue ventolin reliever. Yes ds is the same as your dd always goes to the chest and it takes a while to get rid of. He's vomited twice through the coughing today, he looks exhausted :( I tried to get an appointment but no luck and they have recommended I call out of hours if he gets worse.

I would take him back and get a X-ray done to make sure lungs are clear I went through similar situation and my boy ended up with a tug and breathing difficulties and took a seizure took him over 3 months to recover due to infections constantly
