Ds 13 has an ingrown toenail, has had it for about 6 weeks. He’s had two courses of antibiotics but it’s still infected. Going to ring gp first thing but will they even do anything??

He has an appointment for podiatry on 19th December for them to assess him but he can’t go on like this till then

My 14 year old was the same earlier this year
Dr said podiatry referral could take weeks
So we went private
£200 for toe nail wedge resection
He is now back playing football etc

NotTodayBillyRay · 22/11/2017 20:46

If she’s had the money to go private I would

Sadly it'll just be repeat antibiotics til he can get it sorted :(

NotTodayBillyRay · 22/11/2017 21:47

I’m going to ring some chiropodists tomorrow and get their prices. Ds can hardly walk, he can’t wait a month so will have to find the money somehow

DS1's ingrown toenail was treated by a podiatrist for £60. Money incredibly well spent if you can afford it.

They basically dug out the nasty bit of nail. It was painful for him but he tolerated it and we didn't have to have the hole nail wedge removal thing.

NotTodayBillyRay · 22/11/2017 21:55

Ohh that sounds better, but I think ds is going to need his nail cut off...

Ouch!!!
Poor boy
I would urge you to try and find a local podiatrist
Does the Drs surgery have a podiatry clinic??
That's needs dealing with asap

NotTodayBillyRay · 22/11/2017 22:20

Well when I googled podiatrists I found one who works at my surgery so I will be asking in the morning.

That photo was taken two weeks ago, it’s gotten worse but I haven’t managed to take a photo.

Holy shit, how can they leave him like that?! Shock I recently had a very minor ingrown toenail and it hurt worse than giving birth, throbbing all night. I would call the GP and demand they get it sorted somehow very quickly as he is in immense pain.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 24/11/2017 17:33

Holy cow, that looks awful. Mine was like that but only on one side years ago and when I knocked it, Oh my god absolutely worse than child birth. The kind of pain that makes you feel faint.

I’m amazed they haven’t suggested surgery yet, your poor son.

My understanding is that until the offending piece of nail is removed, the localised infection will continue.

NotTodayBillyRay · 25/11/2017 15:23

Well it's not infected. Doctor couldn't do anything except told to take calpol for the pain.

OP posts:
mrsreynolds · 25/11/2017 15:52

He'll need more than Calpol for that

Quartz2208 · 25/11/2017 19:56

Definitely ring podiatrists mine is £35 for a 30 minute appointment

Theweasleytwins · 26/11/2017 19:35

I had an ingrown toenail for 6 years, scared of the operation 😅had antibiotics a couple of times, never worked. Went back earlier this year, refused the antibiotics because they failed before. They sent me to Nhs podiatry and they fixed it so fast👍🏻👍🏻

QueenNefertitty · 26/11/2017 19:38

I once had a (minor) ingrown toenail sorted out at a Vietnamese nail salon in whitechapel. They didn't even charge me more than the cost of my pedicure.

I look back now and see how incredibly stupid it was at the time. Then I look at the NHS now, and think that actually it's not such a bad idea...

ivykaty44 · 26/11/2017 19:45

I don’t think a chiropodist would touch that if it if Infected

Podiatrist are surgical so will be different

Quartz2208 · 26/11/2017 20:00

They are the same (I asked mine) it’s just a change of name

ivykaty44 · 26/11/2017 22:31

So they are now

But check before you book that they will treat an infected toe with your DC on antibiotics, you don't want to waste time with an appointment if you get there and they refuse to treat due to infection.

Quartz2208 · 27/11/2017 07:09

The NHS podiatrist and private ones are likely to be the same as they mostly do both!
