What should I do for vomiting toddler

He's never vomited before. Has been sick 3 times in the last hour, poor thing. Is very upset and saying his belly hurts.

I'm hoping it's just a bug. Is it a case of just keeping him hydrated?

Yes. Don't give them milk as it "feeds" the bug. Just give clear liquids or water based ice lollies.

It will probably pass soon. Wrap him in a towel stick him on your lap with a bowl and put the telly on. Maybe talking about something you will buy him when he is better. He should start to feel better quite quickly if it's a tummy bug.

Little sips of water , warm hot water bottle on his tummy . Lots of towels and bowls nearby . When mine were smaller I used to make them rinse out the taste rather than drinking first of all .

They are amazing one minute they are puking like you wouldn't believe and the next asking you haven't fed them all day. It's always a shock the first time it happens.

I’ve lollys are good, it gets liquid & sugar in them. Make sure the rest of the family wash their hands thoroughly - stomach bugs seem to be very easy to pass on and they are horrible

Thanks so much. He's just fallen asleep on my lap in front of tv. It really is quite shocking isn't it! I find it very hard not to get upset with him. Which is clearly useless.

If it's a committing bug type thing do you know how long they last? He's just woken up to be sick again. Not much coming out now though.

It does go on a bit and then it stops. You are quite lucky it's happened during the day (if you can be lucky in this situation) mine always seem to throw up at about 2am.

The frequent vomiting usually stops after 12 hours or so, although you may have the occasional random vomit for a day or two. All you can do is keep him hydrated , this is very important. Milk is fine if he won't drink water/juice.

DD had it last weekend and we kept her off food for 24 hrs. She was gagging when sipping water so a GP friend advised buying 7Up and shaking all the gas from it and allowing her to sip that, definitely sip and not gulp.

7Up has a good balance of salts and sugar which is lost when vomiting and its lots more palatable than diyoralite.

I threw 2 duvets last week because couldn't wash them completely clean.

Thanks again! He's recovered pretty quickly so fingers crossed that's the end of it. Great tip for next time Welsh.
