Calpol hater

One week after having the flu spray DD appears to have flu. She cannot tolerate calpol or nurofen which make her vomit. She's so hot and I imagine achey as she cries every time she moves. Are there any alternatives out there for kids that can't keep medicine down? Or any suggestions for ways I can make her more comfortable without the use of drugs 😥

What age is she?

Keep her cool with a wet facecloth, and a fan if you have one.

Could she have a sore throat and that's making her not want to take medicine? Nurofen is harsher on the stomach, so I'd stick with Calpol. Even if you can get the dose in in little sips or something, that might help.

She's 2 and has always been the same with taking medicine. I don't have a fan, but will see if she will accept a facecloth. Thank you

You can get a medicine dispenser which is a dummy. If she uses one it May help and let her feel that she is controlling taking the Medicine.

I can't really identify. Mine absolutely love Calpol. If one is getting it for something I have the other one sitting like a baby bird expectng some too! It is a pain!

Not advisable to lower temp with facecloth...fever is not the illness it is the body doing an excellent job. Unless she is very uncomfortable can you do skin to skin with her this will help her regulate.

You can get melts now that are like little sweets

marthastew · 15/11/2017 20:38

I think you can get paracetamol suppositories for young children.

DueOct30th · 15/11/2017 20:39

I think you can get paracetamol suppositories l read a thread on here about them. Probably not helpful right now but ask at the pharmacy.

pickedsoup · 15/11/2017 20:54

I have had 2 medicine refusers

Only way I managed was medicine hid in milk/juice

pickedsoup · 15/11/2017 20:55

Yes as a Suppository to many trips to out of hours doctors to get these to

lightcola · 15/11/2017 20:57

I would put the Calpol in some juice and get her to take it that way. Don’t use a flannel to cool her down. Just loose cotton clothing and a sheet. Hope she feels better soon.

Thetartofasgard · 15/11/2017 21:01

Turn it into a game. When ds was a toddler he would never willingly take medicine so I used to dispense it into a saucer and he used to lap it up whilst pretending to be a cat. Worked every time.

Freezingwinter · 15/11/2017 21:03

The boots own brand strawberry flavour is a lot nicer than calpol, could you try it?

abbsisspartacus · 15/11/2017 21:06

Syringe it in but put it in the fridge first it's nice and cool

Katastrophe13 · 15/11/2017 22:41

Thank you for all the ideas. I am going to look for the melts that are like sweets, I think that's my best bet. The only thing she will drink at the moment is water and I'm worried if I put calpol in it she will start refusing that too. If melts don't work i think I will look at getting some suppositories in stock for emergencies! It's so frustrating because She is suffering so much more because she refuses/regurgitates the medicine!

The melts are for 6+.

Bribery with chocolate?
