Best cream for eczema?

I know it’s been asked lots and it varies but I’m struggling to know what to try that is likely to be better. We’ve been given hydramol which is horrid but does keep her skin soft but doesn’t seem to stop the itching and DD says it stings.

Aveeno also stings and isn’t rich enough to keep her skin soft.

Dermol 900 or something like that, was better in the bath than hydramol but still didn’t stop the itching.

Child’s farm in the bath makes her very itchy.

The best thing seems to be no baths or using oats. But what should I try next for a cream? I’ve heard dream cream from lush works for some and also Dexryl.

Any suggestions?

I had to really push for a referral to the dermatologist Pickled Lily (after ds having repeated skin infections and trying a multitude of different emollients), and then after giving him a history of ds's eczema, the derm requested patch testing as his eczema presented unusually and rather fiercely. Among other things, ds is allergic to a particular range of emollient.

DS was also referred to an allergist, which was immensely helpful. Make sure you either hot wash or tumble dry bedding weekly. Dust mites one of the most common triggers for eczema and rhinitis.

We tried everything but as soon as ds was in bed he would scratch until he bled.

But I have finally found a solution that works and he hasn't been sore for almost a year (even when it was ridiculously hot had he was wearing suncream.)

He wears scratch sleeve pjs to bed. They have silk padded mitts on his feet and hands so he can't scratch.

This enables the skin to heal.

We use diprobase when he is a little dry (but used it day and night when first started using the pjs)

Sorry to hear your LO is suffering. My LO also suffers terribly on her face, at its worst it looked as if she had been scoulded/burnt. People used to look at her in the street Sad

I've tried everything mentioned above, didn't help. The only thing that worked for her was Zerobase, prescribed by the dermatologist but I'm guessing you can get it over the counter.

It's also important that we follow other basics, sorry some are really common sense but make a big difference to sufferers:

  • Use only non-bio washing powder & baby fabric conditioner
  • Dress LO in cotton, avoid wool & synthetics
  • Don't let your LO get too hot
  • Avoid soap/bubble bath - we use Zerobase to wash her skin in the bath & just a mild shampoo for hair
  • make sure water isnt too hot & skin is kept thoroughly dry (eg if your LO dribbles gently pat it up with a soft tissue)

The most important thing I found was AVOID baby wipes on the affected skin. This includes water wipes.

If you need to clean the skin use just plain water & a soft tissue. Gently pat the skin dry with another clean tissue.

Avoid steroid creams, they can bring on more problems (google perioral dermatitis something you do NOT want to deal with)

We use the Zerobase 5-6 times per day. Upon waking, before & after eating, before & after naps & bedtime, for washing/bath times. If we are home all day I just keep topping her face up.

The good news is 90% of children grow out of it :)

Aloe Vera plant

Break the leaves off and use the juice store leaf in the fridge

Apply 3 times a day for a few days

Eczema completely going in my kids

Just to add, it's not good practice to keep changing creams etc. Stick to one & give it a chance. You are right that baths bring it out at it's worst, so topping/tailing is okay you don't have to bath them every night.

The dermatologist also told us that nothing causes it as such - it is just in your LO's make up (just like some people are more susceptible to hayfever or allergies)

But things in the environment can irritate and make it worse such as perfume, over washing, temperatures etc as per my list above
