Glue ear?

Please talk to me about glue ear. How do you know your LO has it? What kind of symptoms does it show? How did you get fixed?

My lo is a little slow on her speech and often is a bit aggressive. She’s had her adenoids out for breathing issues already so I’m not sure if this would have picked up or cured glue ear if she had it. She’s had a number of ear infections but not a massive amount. It’s the speech delay that’s worrying me most. The aggression I can see being frustration about not being able to say what she wants.

I had glue ear on and off all though childhood.

To me everything was extremely quiet, and sounded a bit like I was underwater. Painful too.

I think a lot of people just thought I was being ignorant.

I also suffered with constant ear infections. I had my adenoids taken out and gromits put in when I was about 7 I think.

Ds has it.
For him it was constant ear infections from when he was 10 weeks old until first set of grommets at 20 months. By constant I mean around every 10 days. So hard to miss.

Witcher’s that sounds grim! Poor him and you. Hope the grommets helped.

My son has speech delay and he also had glue ear, It seems to have gone now on his latest check, Get her referred for her speech delay and she should then also be referred for a hearing test as part of that, To be honest I was really surprised my child had glue ear, He had it in both ears, It went on its own which the hearing specialist said it was likely to, I did notice when his hearing was improving everything seemed loud to him and he would ask me "whats that noise?" alot and touch his ears.
His speech has come on amazing since.

You could also request a hearing test via your gp. Good luck op hope you get it sorted.

My dd failed her newborn screening and was diagnosed at around 8 months old. Following this we had regular checkups and an ENT referral. She wasn’t put forward for grommets in the end because despite the glue ear she appeared to be able to hear well enough for speech. She’s 5 now and doesn’t stop talking, I did request a hearing test earlier this year because she was asking us to repeat ourselves and it shows that the glue ear is clearing by itself which is common. She did used to get a lot of ear infections but that has also improved as she’s got older.
Your HV or GP can refer you to audiology and sit for a speech assessment.

Just had my daughter at the docs for speech issues and doc looked in her ears and thought she had glue ear. Been referred for hearing tests.

No ear infections here but sometimes I did wonder if she could hear me. Hoping hearing test comes through pretty quickly.
