What does colour blindness have to do with growth hormone??

I posted previously on DS (nearly 15) not growing but have started a new thread as I'm quite worried and have a question!

DS has had bloods taken as he's showing no sign of puberty and is only 140cm, waiting on results.

DM bumped into the GP today and she said to take DS to the optician to check for colour blindness as it might show something up. Does anyone know what it would show? I am blue/yellow colourblind and the tests are just coloured shapes usually with numbers in. What on earth does this have to do with him not growing? The GP is off until Thursday so I can't speak to her until then and I'm worried now!

Having google searched "colour blindness and height" and nothing come up I'd say if there is any link, then it's unusual.

I think it's usually tested at the year R sight tests (mine were anyway) so I'd expect it to be picked up-but you can do a test with him on line easily enough for that.

It may be that the GP is thinking that they want to give a full picture to the consultants and there may be some vague link, so if they know he is colour blind then they will le the consultant know. A bit like I've had to fill out full medical history from what sort of birth onwards when ds had something they couldn't place even though he was 8yo!

Posted waaaay too soon!

I couldn't see anything except Kallman syndrome (?) Which mentions colour blindness but his sense of smell is fine, so I don't think it's that. I did a test online and his vision is fine so I've no idea. Maybe she's just covering all the bases.

The only visual thing I could think of that would link would be that some pituitary gland problems can give you problems with your visual fields, due to the cross over fibres in the optic nerves passing so close by. But more likely to see that with excessive growth, rather than short stature...

Thanks nocool that's what I thought. I guess I'll just have to wait until Thursday.

My thoughts ran to pituitary gland probs too - which have caused my son to be GH deficient. So it can go both ways. One of the first signs of trouble was visual field problems.

Thanks BlackSwan my DS hasn't any visual problems (except very weak reading glasses) but I've got an eye appointment for him any way.

Thanks for all the replies, I feel a bit better now!
