Two year old has Tonsillitis and not drinking

Hi, I hope someone can help me. My two year old DD has Tonsillitis. She's been poorly for a week not but it's been a lot worse the past 2 days. She has been having high temperatures, is crying a lot with pain, very, very clingy to me, wanting constant cuddles. Yesterday the GP prescribed the antibiotics Phenoxymethylpenicillin, but it tastes horrible and getting it down her is a nightmare. I literally have to force it down, using a Calpol syringe. What is worrying me the most is that all day today, the only thing she has had to drink is her bottle of warm milk, to which I also added some water, which she had this morning. She has been refusing to drink anything else. She won't eat an ice lolly either. I'm assuming that she won't drink because it hurts to swallow. I'm very worried about her becoming dehydrated and if she continues not to drink, I'm going to have to take her to hospital. The question is, how long do I leave it before I take her to hospital? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Ice cream or slushy you could probably make your own stick some squash in the freezer for an hour till it goes mushy and not frozen and give it to ger with a spoon, poor baby though she must be feeling cack

Lollies or ice cubes.

MrsJayy · 21/09/2017 18:31

Im not sure how long id leave it though you probably best phoning nhs direct

Have you got some painkillers into her? Is she able to swallow saliva?

Will she take fluids in the form of ice lollies or similar?

My dd ended up in hospital at the point when she started drooling as unable to swallow saliva Sad

Hi OP, I'd recommend difflam spray from chemist over the counter and also calpol and nurofen.
The combo of those will get her drinking again until the antibiotic kicks in and her throat less sore.
Jelly is quite a good food easy to swallow and has water in it too which will help.
Hope she's feeling better soon Flowers

I would phone 111 and ask tbh because dehydration can happen very quickly.

picklemepopcorn · 21/09/2017 18:38

Would she eat something like puréed fruit or custard? They have water in. I loved chilled custard when I used to get tonsillitis.

What about jelly? That is water, effectively. Could you make a game of it, she feeds you some jelly, you feed her some?

Thank you everyone for your advice. I have put some squash in the freezer to make slushy. I've been giving her both Calpol and Nurofen, as advised by the GP, which seems to be helping a bit. She's sleeping at the moment and when she wakes up I will try her with the slushy. I'll also ring 111 to ask about dehydration. I've never seen her so poorly before, the poor thing.

Is she still peeing? Is her mouth wet?

You can syringe in 5ml of water every 10 minutes or so. Even less at a time if need be.

Dear all, phew I can breathe! My daughter has now drunk some hot chocolate (that was made with mostly water) and eaten most of an ice lolly. In addition she's had half a bag of crisps and has just asked for more hot chocolate. She's sitting on the sofa watching Topsy and Tim and has been smiling. She still feels warm, but I'm really hoping and praying she's over the worst of it and the antibiotics are starting to work. Unfortunately she hasn't had the full dose of antibiotics today as she is refusing to have any more. I'm hoping she can still get better without the antibiotics, but I'm going to ring the GP tomorrow to see if they can prescribe some different antibiotics which taste nicer. I'm wondering why the makers of Phenoxymethylpenicillin can't do anything to improve the taste as it really is horrible and a two year old can't understand that it will make them better and only think you are making them swallow something awful.

There we go, corner turned.

Sometimes, a tablet crushed and sprinkled on ice cream is easier than syrup.

Good painkillers working hope she is better soon i know tye antibiotics are rank but a a scoosh in and you can bribe her with something nice
