8 month old fever

hahavzv · 20/09/2017 13:27

So my 8 month old has had a fever and this is the third day going. I've been giving him calpol to help reduce the fever but I've not noticed much difference. He has a blocked nose and so finds it hard to sleep at night (and feed). I've tried nasal sprays but sometimes it works by letting him sleep for an hour. I took him to the GP yesterday and told him all this and he said if he starts vomiting, diarrhoea and is not himself then seek medical attention...(I thought I was seeking medical attention by the GP but clearly not.) anyway, as mentioned before, this is the third day going and today he has started vomiting. Vomit is all milk but it is a lot. It's not what you would normally see. He's vomited twice so far like this. What should I do? Should I be worried? Should I wait today out and see if there's an improvement tomorrow? Or is there something I can get from the pharmacy? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!!

His symptoms have worsened so you need to seek medical advice, now is the time give the GP a call and ask for him to be seen. I hope the poor little mite feels better soon.

Call GP, explain what the doctor has said and on that basis can you get an emergency appointment.
Hope he's better soon OP

Hi guys, thanks so much for your replies. I rang my GP and they're closed due to training. I really don't want to wait long in urgent care or anything if that's where I need to go.

Give 111 a call, they will triage you on the phone and arrange an appointment.

Are his hands and feet cold to the touch despite his high temperature? Is he listless? Are there any changes in skin colour? Are his nappies drier than normal? If the answer to any of these is yes he needs to be seen and assessed urgently

hahavzv · 20/09/2017 13:55

Hmm I will have to ring them again then. At the moment I can feel his temperature is high again (he's asleep) and his hands and feet are ok. There no other changes. Just the fever and vomiting really.

Just checked. His hands are warm but feet are cold.

Ring 111 now.

Just do it, please.

KarateKitten · 20/09/2017 14:04

OP, I'd say he may well be fine but considering how long he's been having temps and the new development of vomiting so late in the sickness I'd get him seen by whatever out of hours or alternative service is in place for your GPs.

Just out of interest, how high are the temps typically and how is his overall form?

hahavzv · 20/09/2017 14:41

Rang 111 and they're going to get a clinician to ring me back within 2 hours. I've just measured his temp and it's come up to 38.9 degrees! He's not eating properly. When I feed him he drinks but eventually vomits it out. You can tell he's weak. He's not the hyper self he normally is. Just wants to sit next to me and cuddle. I'm getting really worried now.

Thinking of both of you OP Flowers

KarateKitten · 20/09/2017 15:54

Haha, I wouldn't be too worried at all. His temp is pretty normal for simply being unwell, not sky high. I always find neurofen works better than calpol so maybe give that a try? If he's eating a little and drinking enough I'm sure he's fine. But great that you've someone calling to run things by. I'd want him seem at this stage but wouldn't be alarmed.

hahavzv · 20/09/2017 16:31

Thank you @ineedwine99
Well the clinician rang me back saying I should take him to get seen at the walk in centre. Got there and they told me doctor isn't in until 5pm and that I should go back home and wait. She said the queue is long after 5pm and so doesn't know when I will get seen.
Now I'm feeling I should stay home and wait til tomorrow to see if there's any difference. Will take the advice and get some neurofen and try that. Hopefully it'll do wonders.
I've just fed him. Now just waiting to see if he will keep it in.
Thanks

OP if he's willing to put it in his mouth it's a good sign, even if it comes out again. Keep up the small quantities of liquids though regardless of how much comes back out. Just keep a close eye and hopefully the neurofen will control the temp better and for longer for you.

ineedwine99 · 20/09/2017 16:43

Hoping the neurofen helps, poor baby, it’s awful when they’re ill.

hahavzv · 20/09/2017 16:59

I know! You just feel so helpless!

The main thing is to keep him hydrated while you wait to see the doctor. Get some dilute juice or squash (with sugar in it not no added sugar) and give him 5ml every 5 minutes via a medicine syringe instead of a lot of fluid in one go. There is more chance of him keeping it down that way reducing the likelihood of him becoming dehydrated and having a low blood sugar.

Strip him of to his nappy to reduce his fever if he cannot keep down paracetamol or ibuprofen syrup. The doctor can prescribe rectal paracetamol if required.

hahavzv · 20/09/2017 20:10

Just a quick update. He hasn't thrown up since. Given him calpol. He's gone to sleep. He is coughing a bit tho.
