How long for temperature to come down

BarchesterFlowers · 17/09/2017 18:20

11 year old - 40.3 deg c since last night - tonsillitis diagnosed at OOH earlier and on antibiotics.

I am alternating calpol and ibruprofen, she is wearing a vest and pants, drinking iced water and had a couple of ice lollies - temp not budging.

If the the temp hasnt come down at all with meds I would be inclined to phone your out of hours.
They aren't normally bothered to much about a temp but 40+ seems rather high for the period of time.
Also dont try and cool her down to much as that can make the temp worse.
Hope you dc feels better soon.

shushpenfold · 17/09/2017 18:25

I would say give it 24-36 hours but no longer. The analgesics should bring the temp down a little; do they not?

PrincessoftheSea · 17/09/2017 18:26

I would call in if I could not bring a temp that high down.

busytimesahead · 17/09/2017 18:27

Apart from the temp how is she in herself?
If you are worried and it has not come down I would ring back to 111.

BarchesterFlowers · 17/09/2017 18:28

No, no change since this morning, last calpol at 5:30pm, ibruptofen at 1pm. Temp constant - even now 40.3.

Is she awake and responsive? My pead has always said that if the temp is over 40 and doesn't budge then it's A&E.

busytimesahead · 17/09/2017 18:30

A&E in my opinion

BarchesterFlowers · 17/09/2017 18:30

Quite unwell busy, but I can still get a smile, tired, v bad headache which was how it started on Friday eve. Came home from school with a headache.

She is fairly tough which makes it seem worse when she is ill.

My dd of a similar age gets a very high temperature with tonsilitis but it always goes down with ibuprofen.
I would have her checked again if it isn't going down at all.

busytimesahead · 17/09/2017 18:32

Posted too soon - check for rashes - all over, how is she in herself? Talking? Etc? Then just head to A&E that is a high temp and not a medical person but think 40 without a change is time to check other things

huha · 17/09/2017 18:35

Headache plus a temp that won't budge and over 40= A&E. Please go.

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 17/09/2017 18:35

My dd was like that and ended up in a&e, her throat swelled up so much she struggled to breathe. Take her back if you are worried, trust your instincts.

BarchesterFlowers · 17/09/2017 18:35

Thanks. I will take her, we were there at 1030 am.

Sensible.

BarchesterFlowers · 17/09/2017 18:39

No rashes and she was exactly like she is now when she was seen this morning hence my questioning my instinct to take her back, no change in temp or anything else.

Waiting for a callback.

Hi, any sign of these things:
Fast breathing
Confusion
Fast heart rate
Rash
cold hands
Mottled or grey skin?
These can be due to a temp but also i warning signs
Let us know how you get on?

Lukeandlorelai4Ever · 17/09/2017 18:49

Good call with taking her back, high temp with headache I wouldn't ignore. Hope she feels better soonFlowers

busytimesahead · 17/09/2017 19:23

Have they rung back?

You can always go straight to A&E?

PlugUgly1980 · 17/09/2017 19:49

Don't try and cool her too much! It can be counter intuitive, light clothing and cool drinks, but if you cool then too much you cause the temperature to spike again, which is why they don't advise cold baths/sponging etc any more.

BarchesterFlowers · 17/09/2017 19:49

Yes, just spoke to a Dr who said that as she hasn't deteriorated and has no bright lights/stiff neck issues we should watch and wait.

Trust your instinct here, go to A&E if she seems poorly. My daughter had septicaemia and time matters with these things. That's a high temp and should improve with ibuprofen/paracetamol. Better to be seen and them decide with proper checks all is ok than miss something more serious overnight and be too late.

Quartz2208 · 17/09/2017 22:20

Yes my son had sepsis from scarletfever and his temp would not budge he had a non blanching rash. He went downhill fast but fortunately did it at the ooh next to a&e so it was caught early.

I would take her in if the temp is not moving my son never had the stiff neck or light aversion

BarchesterFlowers · 18/09/2017 06:23

Thanks everyone, pleased to report that it is on the way down this morning, a mere 38.9, no calpol etc since midnight.
