How to survive the night with toothache

loveastorm21 · 13/09/2017 21:28

Ds1 is 7, has developed an awful toothache, holding face screaming like I've never heard before. Ive give paracetamol and nurofen which has took the edge off and he's managed to fall asleep. I'm dreading the middle of the night when the painkillers wear off and it wakes him. Any tips on how to help soothe pain if it does come back? Will
Be ringing the dentist at 8am as soon as they open to get him in. Thank you

Hot water bottle and more medication as soon as you can?

Give him the next dose of pain relief at midnight, gently wake him up if necessary. Don't wait until his pain is bad enough to wake him. It'll be harder to get that type of acute pain under control as quickly.
Alternate Ibuprofen with Paracetamol.
Leave 3.5 hrs between doses. Give the appropriate dose for his age and weight.
Prop/elevate his head up on an extra pillow tonight in case he's getting an abscess. Not an uncommon scenario btw.

Do not put a hot water bottle anywhere near his face; that's a sure fire way to make it worse, especially if there's an abscess. The only thing a hot water bottle is good for with dental issues is with TMJ pain.
Good luck OP, (am a dentist).
