Miserable 3yo following chest infection

My happy, chirpy DS has disappeared and I'm not sure what to do next. DS started acting very miserably last Thurs, and by Friday he had a horrid barking cough with a temp of 39.7. Took him to the GP on Sat who was able to rule out croup but diagnosed a chest infection and gave him amoxicillin.

The bark and wheeze has gone, and the temp, and has been replaced by a spluttery cough much more like the type he gets with a cold, but he's absolutely miserable! For the last three days he's asked me to go to bed at 11.30am and napped for at least two hours, and when he is awake he's either on the sofa staring vacantly at the TV or crying and whinging at me for daring to venture from his side.

I've taken him out for quick trips to the shops (in the buggy) but tbqh I haven't taken him anywhere like the park because he's just too tired and sad.

Is he still ill? Should I take him back to the GP or give it a bit more time?

I really feel for your son. I have suffered chest infections all my life. I just had one in July and still have a cough.
I know how your son feels its absolutely miserable.
You should take him back to the doctor if the antibiotics have finished as he may need further medication.
I hope he feels better soon.

I agree with Posh. I get chest infections a lot due to being asthmatic. They drain you for a long time. The effort it takes to breathe properly when you have one is exhausting, not to mention potentially lower oxygen levels make you very tired indeed.

If he's not getting worse (i.e. temp not returning, and no coloured sputum when he coughs) I'd call the doctor and ask for advice. If they think he needs to be seen they'll make an appt for him. If he's getting worse, straight back to docs without calling first. But chances are, he just needs time to rest and recover. Lots of fluids, cuddles and sleep.

Keep us posted OP

I should also add that I had my traditional end of term chest infection in July and am still coughing occasionally! It's becoming tiresome now...
