Advice for 2 year old with urine infection

My DD(2) starting becoming unwell last Monday. Just clingy and tired. Same on Tuesday, and Wednesday morning woke up with a very painful tummy making her vomit, and was screaming in agony when she pee'd. I took her to GP late Wednesday afternoon and she was prescribed antibiotics for UTI. And a sample was sent off which confirmed infection on Friday. The antibiotics were for 3 days and last dose was Saturday night.
However today she has been unwell again, not drinking and not urinating and started complaining of a sore tummy again. Her temperature was raised going to bed. The problem is she has barely ate or drank since last Monday. I've tried everything to get her to drink but she is only having about one cup of something per day.
Should I take her back for more antibiotics? Or do they need more time to work? Poor thing just isn't right.

Take back of course - they don't work after you've stopped taking them.

Take her back and stock up on ice lollies, jello all forms of liquid. She needs to be drinking more for sure.

Watermelon, Ice lollies, etc.

I would go back to g.p.

Take her back to the doctors. My DD has kidney reflux and it presented in that way too - she had various tests and ultra sounds and is seen every year by a consultant. She is growing out of it like most do, but took prophylaxis til she was about 7 to hold back any Ito to keep her kidneys 'safer' for want of a better word!

My DD had scarring on her kidneys and they're low, plus are a bit squint in the positioning in her body but essentially everything works ok

Go back and ask about reflux as she's had the UTIs back to back

I'd go back and hand in another sample and prob get more antibiotics from the gp. The 3 day treatment course is fine for a basic uti but in pylonephtritis (where the infection spreads up the the kidneys) a longer course is needed.

Def try to encourage her with fluids amd remember wet foods like fruit, lollys yoghurts will help too! If shes not drinking or eating much make sure its sugary juice shes drinking to help give her some energy. Hope shes on the ment soon.

If she is spiking temperatures again, not drinking and not urinating then she needs to be seen again asap by a doctor. Phone 111 for advice call as they may suggest that she needs to go to A&E. In the meantime you need to push the fluids by giving her 5ml of sugary drink every 5 minutes as she will likely be quite dehydrated by now if she has only had a cup of drink all day.

She has drank some more today. Not much to eat. And has complained of back pain. I've managed to get a sample from her so it will be the GP again tomorrow, although I will ask if they will accept a sample to test if I am able to just hand it in. She has went to bed with no temperature but has developed a cough out of the blue! Been up to settle her three times since 9pm. Sad

Why are you delaying?! You could be causing her kidney damage by not acting on this quick enough. You should have gone to the Drs today quite frankly. The back pain is likely kidney pain.

SnowiestMountain · 12/09/2017 22:54

I think you should call 111 and get some sort of out of hours appointment now, the back pain suggests it's her kidneys.

TheSerengeti · 12/09/2017 23:09

She needs to go to hospital now- this could cause permanent kidney damage

LondonLassInTheCountry · 12/09/2017 23:45

How much is she peeing in 24 hours?

Has she got a wet mouth? Tears?

Backingvocals · 13/09/2017 20:29

This won't go away on its own. Needs antibiotics asap. DD has had scores of urine infections and has kidney damage as a result. You need to get her seem OP.

I'm sorry for taking a while to come back to you. It has been an absolute bomb of a day.
I took her in last night and managed to get a sample so there were white cells present so started in a longer course of antibiotics.
This is where I am fuming. She was very unwell a couple of months ago and it was ongoing for weeks, and we were back and forward to GP until after 8 weeks he sent us up to the paediatrician at hospital. They ran bloods, checked her top to bottom, and took a urine sample. They said they would phone if anything showed up within 48 hours. At the time I followed up to be sure and they assured me that if anything showed they would call me. Turns out they had dipped the urine at hospital in July, and it showed white cells, but they failed to lab test it and follow it up. So the GP said it is possible she has had it for a long time! She is referring us to hospital again to get her kidneys checked.
She has been drinking and weeing lots today and had no accidents. And is definitely not as bad as she was.

OP ask them about kidney reflux - it sounds very similar to the way things panned out with my DD and it's not that uncommon good luck
