Hi just wondering if anyone could help . My 16 year old daughter was diagnosed with pneumonia Thursday and started trimpothaptrin (Sorry if I spelt that wrong ) and has gradually been getting worse. She has been throwing up every few hours , getting some itchy rashes and some eye brusing. Today though she went to the shop and when she came home she was gasping for breathe and was complaning of extreme chest pain , her resting heart rate was 101. Shes ok now but she's never had a issue with this medication before and her wheezing is still there , she's due to start college tomorrow . Any advice ?

Hello
Go to A&E now, I've never heard of Trimethoprim being used as first line in chest infections/pneumonia - unless its a very new thing. Anyway its not working is it? She needs checking over and a chest X-ray maybe. The triage nurse at A&E can redirect you if they feel you can wait but with those symptoms they'd be brave to do so. You don't want to miss sepsis and neither will they. Go to A&E.

A&E nurse here - please go to A&E!!

Thenutlookedgood · 11/09/2017 20:14

Paediatrician here - I agree, don't wait, go to A&E.

Freezingwinter · 11/09/2017 20:16

I'm a paeds nurse, you need to take her to accident and emergency immediately!!!
How is she now?? Does she warrant 999?

Freezingwinter · 11/09/2017 20:17

Also, could her symptoms be a reaction to the trimethoprim?

Applesandpears56 · 11/09/2017 20:18

Yes def a and e now - sounds like she might need a different antibiotic

LoniceraJaponica · 11/09/2017 20:22

Ditto the above. I hope she feels better soon Flowers

What is it with people pissing about on forums instead of getting medical help ?

AFingerofFudge · 11/09/2017 20:28

Aww AF it's not pissing around, it's sensible people who don't wish to be a burden asking others. Not everyone is confident when it comes to having a clear perspective on your child's health.

poppym12 · 11/09/2017 20:34

Definitely a & e. I've only ever heard of trimethoprim being used for a uti.

thecatfromjapan · 11/09/2017 20:48

It's not 'sensible' to be ambling about on a forum - asking the advice of completely unqualified strangers - when you have a child with pneumonia (and you live in a first world country, with a health service). It's the opposite of sensible.

thecatfromjapan · 11/09/2017 20:50

Sorry if I sound harsh but someone close to me died of pneumonia. They weren't old.

lougle · 11/09/2017 21:33

The antibiotic has had 4 days to work and isn't helping, so it's the wrong one. That antibiotic usually works best for urinary tract infections anyway.

You need to take your DD to A&E so she can be seen by doctors. She may well be developing sepsis, which is life threatening.

TheHatOfDoom · 12/09/2017 15:48

I was going to comment that trimethroprim makes me throw up so could partially be a reaction to that but you need to get her to see a doctor. But I see now that all the posts are from yesterday. So instead I will say that I hope you got her help and she's on the way to feeling better.

woosey35 · 12/09/2017 16:09

How's your daughter doing?

LondonLassInTheCountry · 12/09/2017 16:27

Hope you went to a&e and ur daughter is ok
