3yo lactose intolerance

HV has suggested trying to eliminate lactose from our DD's diet due to her awful poo situation (many many tiny poos, but quite soft and sticky not constipated, or at least with the addition of lots of prunes she is mainly OK!)

She likes coconut milk/cream stirred into things so I'm going to get her some coconut milk alternative, and Pure spread, coconut yoghurts. Thankfully nursery have a dairy free meal every lunchtime which has saved our bacon re hot dinners!

HV said they don't recommend soya milk for under 5s any more, and I know rice milk is not good either.

Are both of those OK as a small part of something though? Obviously we eat rice as a dish, but I'm not sure for example about soya cheese, or dairy alternatives that have soya as an ingredient.

And any other tips please!

I had this myself a while back (but DD is adopted so no link there), and I remember that cheese was quite low lactose anyway so if there is an improvement we could introduce that again after a few weeks.

I am lactose I tolerant and simply switched to lactofree brand milk, which has the lactose removed. There are plenty of dairy free spreads around but do check the label as most margarine has buttermilk in it. Hard cheese like Parmasean has very low levels of lactose in but soft cheeses are higher. Personally I find normal cheddar etc. does affect me quite a lot, so instead use the lactofree brand or go without. Tesco do a lactose free mozzarella which you can use to make your own pizzas and most supermarkets have own brand dark chocolate which contains no milk (and is much better than the dairy free alternatives).

If your HV has suggested trying no dairy then go for it full force and check everything (honestly, you'll be surprised the stuff that contains milk products). Then work back up slowly. I can manage a kit kat chunky now, or a single glazed doughnut. Any more than that and I start feeling grim. It's not just nausea and diarrhoea but when it first developed the stomach cramps were so bad I thought I was dying.

The HV was mainly suggesting no lactose (which was what I had myself, so I'm a bit more familiar with that than completely dairy free).

I'll watch out for the hard cheeses etc - I can't remember myself - there was so little around in those days (over 20 years ago, I had it as a result of a bad stomach bug and it went away after a few months) that I can't remember what I had instead.

(So I don't think I'm going to worry about a small amount of something milk based as long as it isn't actually lactose).
