Cat accidentally bit toddler's finger

Hi. I have a very friendly cat which my toddler fed a treat to today. Unfortunately he's very greedy and thought there was more in her hand and he nipped her finger. It's a very small bite but it did draw blood.

I've washed the wound and put antiseptic wound wash on it but I'm now worried about infection. What does Mumsnet think? Should I take her to the dr?

I would give the out of hours doc a ring and run it past them just

Yes ring OOH I got cellutis from a dog running into my leg and taking the top layer of skin off with a tooth. it was literally initially smaller than a child's pinky fingernail but led to an infection i needed 2 types of antibiotics to remove

cat's mouths are very dirty, but I wouldn't take a child to the dr over this myself. You have cleaned and disinfected it. If it goes red/nasty then I would go, but then I tend to not go unless absolutely necessary.

As an alternative, you could pop into a pharmacist in the morning and ask them, they can deal with these sort of issues, and no need to get emergency appointment

The above suggests you should always seek medical advice if bitten by an animal and the skin is broken. I would ring 111.

Dear all - thanks for all your responses. FYI (hopefully this won't be something you have to deal with) I did call OOH and they got a prescription for me which I just collected. I have been told not to use the antibiotics, but to keep an eye on my DD and the wound. If there's any sign of infection then I can give her them immediately.

This happened to my son a few months ago. I rang out of hours and they said any cat bite that has penetrated the skin and drawn blood is always treated with antibiotics as there are lots of germs in cats mouths. They told me to ring my GP in the morning and before I could the nurse had rung to ask whether we wanted liquid or tablet form. She also saw him to check the wound.
For what it's worth I have two friends, one is a GP and the other an A+E nurse. One told me not to get antibiotics and the other said get them!!
(I have more than two friends by the way!!😂)
