Not sure what to do about my 5 month old

From my pregnancy my wee boy has had his parents. I had a boy born at 37 weeks via normal delivery. He has serve reflux, (possible) cows protein allergy, apnea attacks and had serve diarrhoea for the past 2 months only stops when moved from similac to nutramigen and solids. I just don't know where I stand sometimes his consultant says no milk and then a gp said try him. I have listened to consultant and he had a jar today that didn't say on the back that it contained milk but all of a sudden his face became like this. Has this happened to anyone and has anyone been able to get doctors to listen Confused

I would listen to the consultant; they are the experts.

With pre-made foods look for anything in the ingredients list that says:
Milk
Lactose
Whey
Casein

Food wise, I found it best to give my DS food I made as then you know what's in it.

Also, there can often be a soya allergy as well as a milk allergy.

Might be worth asking for a referral to a dietitian for guidance with weaning and diet.

He's gorgeous btw Smile

Did he get the food on his face? Sometimes when my dd who is now 20 months if she eats sauce especially anything tomato based like bolognaise she gets red marks where the food has been on her face. Usually dies down in an hour or two.

If not then he could have allergies but he is only 5 months old so it can be tricky to find what he's allergic to so young and lots of children grow out of allergies also

He's beautiful!

If I were you, I would definitely listen to the consultant, not the GP. My DD has food allergies, and a huge number of intolerances. Our GPs, though well-meaning, are pretty clueless. We have had lots of help from the allergy clinic at St Mary's, Paddington. They have been very clear that we are not to try DD with foods we know she is intolerant/allergic to at this point (she is 2). Eating food they are intolerant to can cause some pretty nasty internal problems in the gut and oesophagus. Eating food they are allergic to can be catastrophic.

Is your DS being seen by an allergy specialist?

courtneyfoster8 · 02/09/2017 00:24

He's been seen by a dietitian at 10 weeks as he took a blood infection and they said they think it was a cows protein allergy so they put him on simliac and he was find til about 12 weeks later he then started taking bad diarrhoea and only way to get it to stop was start him on solids and they changed his milk not long after but if he's just on his milk the diarrhoea comes back.

OP
You've posted a photo and the name of your child on a public Internet forum. Are you sure you wanted to do that? The name is totally unnecessary, you could report your own post and ask MN to edit it?

ShovingLeopard · 02/09/2017 00:48

I would push for a referral to a specialist allergy clinic. Dietitians are great at helping with the diet, but you need a doctor to decide on meds, investigations, dietary exclusions etc.

Have you been given a protocol to follow when introducing new foods?

Am I right in thinking Similac contains cow's milk, in a broken down form? If so, you may need to try a completely dairy-free formula, such as Alfamino or Neocate.

With the rash on the face where the food had been, sometimes this is just a reaction to the histamine naturally present in some foods, which is harmless. However, this type of reaction usually dies down pretty quickly. I have never seen it last as long as the timescale you state. Not a Dr, though!

IckyPop · 02/09/2017 00:50

If he's got gastric symptoms while only having nutramigen it could be that. Nutramigen is not completely allergen free. The milk protein is broken down loads so will not cause a reaction in many cases. The only completely allergen free milk is neocate (amino acid based formula).

My DS had gastric symptoms for his milk allergy. Weaning really helped at about 5.5 months. Pear and butternut squash were great for him. Just plainly steamed pear blended at first. Then butternut squash after a few days butternut squash. He had normal poos for the first time!

I'll see how the rash goes over night and if it's still there I'll go back to doctors.

It sounds exactly like a cows milk protein allergy. Please push for an appointment with an allergy clinic and until you see them do not give him any foods contacting cows milk (you will need to do a lot of packet reading). Just remember its in lots of things - cakes, many biscuits, some crisps.
