DD neck lump - would you be worried?

DD (4) has had a lump – docs say ‘persistent gland’ – in her neck for 6mths. Size of a pea, apparently the edges are ‘neat’ and not ‘raggedy’. It hasn’t grown.

She’s under paed care for another condition, which is under control. Doc didn’t seem worried about the lump when he last saw her 12wks ago and said ‘if it’s anything sinister she’d be very ill by now’. He did take blood which came back fine.

Lump sort of ‘hides’ for a bit then becomes more prominent. But it’s never disappeared. It isn’t sore but she can feel it in her neck (at first she fiddled with it a fair bit because it felt unusual I think).

She’s got a cough now that she’s had for 4/5 weeks, and has a permanently swollen belly, which I think is gas (she’s very windy!). She has many bruises which I put down to her being clumsy/a normal active 4yr old.

Generally we’re laid back but truth be told I feel uncomfortable about this lump; it doesn’t seem normal to me that it’s there and hanging around so long. The other factors may not be related but I don’t know, I’m not medically trained.

Help! Should I ask for her to be seen again, or am I overreacting and should leave it be? I’m not sure how long is too long to leave it and worry that I'm wasting GP's valuable time.

Thoughts appreciated, thanks.

Honestly, no it wouldn't. Esp as a doctor has examined it and bloods are ok. I might go back to the doctor about the cough though, and I'd be demanding tests for the tummy (but then i have coeliac disease so tend to be on the look out for tummy probs).

One of our had a neck lump, from year four. She still has it at university. It grows if she's unwell and 'hides' occasionally. Lymph nodes do persist and can become calcified so remain for ever.
Get the cough checked out in case its asthma. The swollen belly could just be swallowing lots of air - does she tend to talk and eat? Does she eat and drink quickly? Does she mouth breathe? All tend to increase air swallowing. Four year olds tend to still have a bit of a rounded tummy anyway as full abdominal muscles are still strengthening.

All my dc have had this. They get bigger when they're ill. Then get smaller in size or completely disappear

I mean the swollen glands.

Thanks for the replies they're really helpful. Sounds like the gland is likely just one of those things - we'll keep an eye on it. And yep I'll get the cough/tummy checked out. I've not noticed that she takes in lots of air when eating/talking etc but will try and be more observant.

DD had a routine ultrasound recently (she has kidney problems) and the sonographer said she was struggling to get a clear view because of all the gas, and remarked at her 'distended' stomach. I replied 'yes she's very windy, I wonder whether to get it checked out' and she just replied 'I don't know' so I didn't come away too concerned. Not that I'm expecting a sonographer to have all the answers it was just a passing conversation.

Anyway thanks again for the replies Smile
