Has your child had mumps?

DD, almost 2, has been diagnosed with mumps today. We will obviously need confirmation from public health but that will take a few weeks. In the meantime she will be staying off nursery for a week.

She did have the MMR at 13 months but her face and neck started to swell fairly quicklybover the course of today and her neck is painful to touch. I have also had suspected mumps pre DD despite being vaccinated. I felt awful for a week so but no complications. DD seems ok, still running about, however she's so little and I'm a bit concerned that things could worsen quickly.

So I'm wondering if anyone else's child has had mumps and could share their experiences. Thanks.

I had it...as a kid. Can remember not being able to eat a toffee from the butchers but not much else! Vaccine isn't very effective. Hope she is better soon, am sure she will be. Great life long immunity now.

My brother had it as an adult and was very unwell but I don't know the details. I think he would have been vaccinated too (1970's).

Not my children, but I had mumps when I was 21.
It is different for everyone, as my friend got it too and had some different experiences (we were the year that somehow only got away with having 1 mmr jab and you need 2 for it to be fully effective, there was a bit of an epidemic that year).

It starts with the swelling around the neck, all lower chin and neck. Can't remember if there was a temperature too. The worst part is the glands at the back of your mouth which swell up and are very painful. As these are the glands that produce saliva, basically whenever you pick up food and are about to take a bite, they start hurting badly. Chewing is very painful. The best thing to do is time the painkillers so they kick in just before eating times. Food needs to be very very mushy or liquid to minimise chewing.
Took about 2 weeks all in all. Even after I had no appetite for ages.

My friend got it differently. He said he had had what he called 'really bad earache' just before he saw me, basically gpt it very mildly. And that was it for him. Although he did then have problems later in a different part of his body as it can affect other organs a bit (worse for men) but particularly pancreas and ovaries in women I think.

I'm really sorry and hope she gets a mild case.

I had mumps at the age of 33 - it was very nasty and developed into viral meningitis

Ds was misdiagnosed with mumps by several gps (despite having had mmr). Took weeks for the swab to come back as negative. He was really not himself with huge swollen glands. Sore throat. Fever. Lethargic etc for weeks

Eventually referred to a paediatrician.
Turned out to be a bad case of strep throat which was cured by 2 weeks of strong antibiotics.

Just wanted to update incase anyone else's child goes through similar. Turns out DD's 'mumps' is unlikely to be mumps, instead it looks like an abscess and she's been admitted to hospital. It's been 2 weeks since the swelling appeared and the lump has increased in size, now being hot to touch and affecting her systemically, so it looks like she will need it drained under GA Sad. My poor DD has struggled through with painkillers and a golf ball lump on her face for the last 2 weeks. I just knew something wasn't right.
