5yo daughter wetting herself

user1471173214 · 24/08/2017 21:35

Ok so I have a 5yo daughter. She's 6 in March 2018. She's been toilet trained for at least 3 years (I'm sure she was toilet trained at 2.5yrs). Anyway, she's just recently started wetting herself during the day and through the night. She's wet the bed 3 nights in a row now and this morning she kept it from me so when I put her to bed earlier tonight I only just found out. She's not wet herself in at least 2yrs. Anyone have any advice or had experience in this? Thanks

I have a daughter the same age - she will be 6 in April 2018.

We have ruled out infection, her bladder empties fine (they did an ultrasound) so it is likely to be a behavioural/developmental thing with our dd. She still isn't dry at night despite our best efforts. The longest she has managed was 4 days.

Is there anything worrying your dd? As she was reception last year, is she worrying about going back to school? Anxiety can be a cause of wetting in otherwise toilet trained children.

Is she just so busy doing what she wants to do that by the times she realises she needs the toilet, she's not got enough time to get there. Ie she is ignoring her body's signals.

Thank you for your reply. Well, she usually does it through the day when she is playing out with her friends so I'm kind of putting that down to her not wanting to miss out on her friends. But through the night I'm not too sure. She loves school and can't wait to go back so I'm not sure it would be that. But she has been away a lot recently. Could it be that it's been too much? She went to Majorca then was back for 2 weeks then went to stay in Wales, for three weeks, then we went camping for another week. But then she's not been wetting the bed until she got home? X

You need to exclude threadworms, uti and constipation.
Read the information on the ERIC website.
After that you could seek advice via gp.

Almost certainly constipation if there is day and night wetting after a period of being dry day and night. It is very common to be unaware that a child is constipated and they can be impacted whilst still passing normal stools. Don't assume it is not constipation if stools are not hard or there is no obvious straining as soft stools can pass around an impaction. Constipation causes night wetting and also lack of warning in daytime causing accidents. Very common for doctors to miss this as they assume constipation must be classic type with hard stools and straining which is not the case. Speak to ERIC helpline as if this is the cause you need to ensure the whole impaction is cleared which cant be done with small dose of laxative and needs prescription doses.

I'd assume a UTI. That's what DS had when he started wetting himself regularly after being potty trained for about a year.

Countfosco - you may be right and at least that can be easily and quickly ruled out by GP with a urine test so is probably the best option to check first as constipation is much harder to confirm. Whenever my kids have had UTI there has always been some stinging/pain but perhaps that is not always a symptom.

Coming to this a bit late but wetting after being dry for a while can be a sign of type one diabetes and I would suggest that you ask the GP to perform a finger prick test to eliminate this. Some GPs can be reluctant to do this (I have no idea why) so you may need to push. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-40391861
