Swallowed 5p coin

DD (nearly 6yrs) swallowed a 5p coin 10 minutes ago.

Are there any HCP with current knowledge on what the protocol is these days? Home alone with the three kids so would prefer to avoid A and E but obviously will go if that is the current advice. Breathing fine, no choking when she swallowed.

Do you have 111 in your area?

StatueInTheSky · 17/08/2017 19:32

wait until morning and see if there is any change?

Aurao · 17/08/2017 19:37

Call 111 and ask what to do?

I guess the only concern would be that it gets stuck on the way down and causes breathing difficulties or similar?

Cherrytart6 · 17/08/2017 19:38

A and E. They will X-ray and check it's not got stuck at a point it can become lodged.

Not a HCP but recent experience.

When DS swallowed a coin (foreign coin but roughly 10p size) we were told just to wait it out unless he felt uncomfortable and it had stuck. This was about four years ago.

When the other DS swallowed a ring pull aged about fourteen for some reasons my keyboard won't go onto numbers he was xrayed as the ring pull had sharp edges. It was far enough down so they said to leave it and let it go through the system. He has no memory of passing it.

This was two years ago.

Apologies for last post, my keyboard would not go onto symbols or numbers.

My 3 year old did his a few weeks ago (2 hours before we were due to board a flight!).
We phoned 111 who told us to go to a&e. We were in and out of a&e in 9 mins which must be some sort of record... the triage nurse waved a metal detector over her stomach to make sure it was in there and hadn't got stuck on the way down, then sent us home! She passed it the next day.
Since it happened I asked a few medic friends what they would have done. All said that they would advise a&e, but that if it was their child they'd leave it and wait for it to pass...

HCP here. Leave it, check stools for next few days.

Cherrytart6 · 17/08/2017 19:45

We were told to go in for X-ray

Raaaaaah · 17/08/2017 19:54

Thanks everyone. I particularly asked HCP Ecureuil for that reason Grin. I figured that there would probably be a disconnect between the advise and what they would do. Not called 111 yet as bum patting DC3 so can't speak on phone only type. Will call in a bit. Inclined to watch and wait but will go in if 111 tell me to.

Advice obvs not advise.

HCP's shouldn't be dishing out advice over the internet ... particularly in a potentially life-threatening situation, or one that may quickly turn into one.

Raaaaaah · 17/08/2017 22:01

Fair point Aurao. It was a quick request before I called 111 though, so no drama Smile.
