Abidec multivitamins alternatives

My 2 month old DD takes abidec mutivits along with another medication. They've been prescribed by a paediatrician and she will need to take them until she is 2. We have a routine paed appointment tomorrow and was considering asking if there was an alternative to abidec that may be suitable as I really dont think she likes the taste and whilst she is very good at taking them, it tends to dribble as she resists swallowing it and she is therefore not taking the full dose. I've tasted it and it's disgusting! She takes her other medicine fine, the flavour of which is much sweeter. There seem to be a variety of multivitamin products available and I was wondering if anyone had any advice on whether it is reasonable for me to ask if she could try something else and if so, any ideas on other products that may do the same job as well as be nicer for her to take? I don't mind paying for a suitable alternative if they were not available on prescription. Any thoughts or advice would be welcomed, thanks Smile

Hi,
It's definitely reasonable to discuss options with your GP or also your pharmacist ( an under used resource imo) as your baby may not be getting all the nutritional supplements she needs.
Before you do that, would it help if you mixed up the abidec & the sweeter meds? She may be more inclined to take them all as they would be sweet - but not too sweet, which isn't a bad thing of course.
Finally, when she dribbles (which is what babies do so well!) can you gently take it from her chin with a spoon & pop it back in her mouth?

Good luck with everything, I hope you both get through these previous first few months as healthily & happily as possible Flowers

Oh and make sure you're taking a supplement yourself, just to make sure you're ok too!

Thanks laudretta, I hadn't thought about trying to spoon it back in, or mixing the 2 meds. I was thinking of perhaps putting a bit of milk in the syringe so will discuss both options with the Doctor. The doesn't seem to be many alternative options for younger babies but perhaps at the 6 month mark she can change to something else. 2 years is a long time to take such a disgusting tasting medicine!!

My 2 months old preemie is also taking abidec, we mix it into a bottle of breast milk. The nurses in nicu told us to do it that way and he drinks it fine. We give him about 20ml ebm to make sure he gets all the vits and then feed him the rest afterwards.

Previous = precious, obviously!

How are you both doing today, serenrose ?

Thank you for your responses.

I asked about the abidec and was advised to continue with it, but not to worry too much about the dribbling. I got the impression they are a recommendation rather than a must have if you see what I mean.

Her other medication has been stopped which is great Grin but does mean we can't mix them but I will try mixing with some milk in the syringe.

Thanks again and I hope your babies are well Flowers

Don't know if it's still around but back in 2008/9 my DD was prescribed dalivit instead of abidec. Don't know if it tastes any better though!

Thanks for the advice, I'll bear those in mind.
