K wire removal

Anyone's kids have this done? Was it OK. My 5 year old is due to get wire removed from her elbow in a couple of weeks time and I'm stressing about it a little.

Don't think the hospital have been particularly helpful at all explaining things. And apart from watching videos on U tube don't have a clue what to expect.
Have been told she might be admitted for it to be done but then at last visit ( no more now) it sounded as if it would be done in clinic.

Did they get another cast on or splint?

Did limb movement come back quickly after wire removed?
Again some Drs have said she will need physio others that it might not be needed. Did your child need physio?

This break has been a very long haul and she's been in cast now for practically 2 months and I guess hoping for really quick recovery also stressing about lack of moving her elbow for 2 months. Still another couple of weeks to go before wire is removed too 😭

Just looking for reassurance i guess

My DD(8) had 3 K wires for a broken wrist. They were only in for 3 weeks though. Taking them out was simple - they just pulled - it wasn't painful. Apparently until recently removal was always done under a general but that's nolonger the case, depending on the break etc. DD was fine with it all. Got a new cast on and home straight away. All took about 30 mins - removal of plaster, wires out, new plaster. In plaster for 6 weeks in total and given excercise to do but no physio. Full movement back very quickly. I would expect physio for 12 weeks in plaster though.

Don't look at You Tube!!
DS had 2 K wires for broken arm (not elbow), I was really concerned about me being squeamish and him being upset about their removal.
The first wire fell out when they took the cast off and the second pulled smoothly and painlessly out.
He held his arm a bit awkwardly for a week or so after cast removal but quickly got back to using it normally.
Am aware elbows might be stiffer and slower to get moving but Drs / nurses in clinic should be able to advise if physio will be necessary (presume you're in UK)
Hope all goes well.

Thanks!!!
She's been brilliant with everything so far although wasn't too cooperative when getting general anaesthetic. But she's saying she wants that again!! Obv we would rather it was done without that and hoping with music and cuddles where needed we can get it done in clinic. It's only 1 wire to come out thankfully. Hospital haven't said anything about another cast although literature from other hospitals mentions it. I will be pushing for physio though. She broke her arm in 1/2 term but only had the operation just under 4 weeks ago. If NHS won't do it then we'll go private.

Just want her sorted now!

I think we will have to work on getting her to move her elbow. She had cast removed after 4 weeks but refused to move it at all when it came off. There was complications so possible the reason but considering I had to cling film up her finger tonight in the bath because of a tiny cut i doubt she will knowingly move it. She is very active though so hoping she forgets about it and moves it
