Pain in DS leg, should I make GP appt?

On Thursday we were walking round a museum and DS (aged 7) suddenly cried out, clutched his leg and sank to the ground. He recovered after a sit down in the cafe but has been walking funny and complaining on and off over the last four days. He says the pain is mainly at the back of his knee, i.e. his tendons, but also in the thigh. He says it hurts when he straightens his leg.

It comes and goes though, and he has also been running about playing. I know it's mean but part of me is a bit suspicious, partly because he will sometimes play sick for sympathy, partly because it seems to reappear when we are engaged in something he doesn't want to do. His brother recently suffered a severe injury and since then DS has had a flurry of non specific injuries and pains that need tending - I do understand why he's doing it.

So I just don't know whether I should take him to the doctors or not. It has been a few days and he is still walking funny (but not all the time) and complaining and I do think he might have done something but I just don't know. Should I just get him to rest his leg? We were on holiday last week and did a lot of walking, but it did seem a sudden thing not a cumulative thing. He didn't fall over, he was just walking along and suddenly went ow.

Has anyone else's DC had similar?

pain without obvious reason, especially if one sided, should always be investigated.

MaroonPencil · 30/07/2017 18:36

Ok then, GP it is! What kind of thing could it be?

Could it be growing pains?

YellowLawn · 30/07/2017 18:42

growing pains is gp speak for 'go away neurotic mother'

is the leg swollen?
warmer than the other?
is it better after resting or after exercise?
how is it at night?

MaroonPencil · 30/07/2017 18:45

I looked up growing pains but it said it would be on both sides.
No it isn't swollen, or warmer, it's fine at night. It seems better after resting, but as I say he has also been running around and playing and is fine, then if we are say walking to the shop - not fine.

I think I will make the appointment (if I can get through tomorrow) - I would feel awful if it was something and I didn't.

Mmm, I'd give it another week personally. 4 days really isn't very long in the absence of any other symptoms.

MaroonPencil · 31/07/2017 08:02

Oh, I don't know what to do. It's impossible to get through to the surgery anyway so making an appointment really takes dedication. I basically need to be phoning now for about an hour until I get through.

Well I haven't got through with a steady half hour of phoning and experience tells me it is pointless calling after half eight as all the appointments have gone so I guess fate or the overburdened NHS is telling me to leave it. He still can't straighten his leg though.

call again in half an hour.
children are usually seen (relatively) quickly

MaroonPencil · 31/07/2017 09:44

Well I finally got through just now. They can offer me an appointment in four weeks time. Or we can come down in person at 8am tomorrow and just wait to be seen. We might have to go home and come back again.

The state of the NHS makes me cry. I love the people who work for it but the system is awful.

ok, do you have minor injuries?

btw I have a dc with similar symptoms. in our case it turned out to be a chronic bone condition.

we went to a&e/minors (at same location in our case).

MaroonPencil · 31/07/2017 09:52

We do have a walk in - I will see if we can get down there. Thanks for all your support YellowLawn.
