Constipation in babies

My DS is 11 weeks and hasn't been for a poo for almost 6 days now. At what point do I take him to the doctor? I would have today but he's been passing wind all day - about every 30 minutes - so I was expecting it to come!

He's breast fed, so I'm not sure what I can change, nothing in my diet has changed recently so I'm not sure what has caused it.

Luckily he doesn't seem to been in too much discomfort but it still worrying me, so I would appreciate some advice! Thanks

Some breastfed babies can go 7-10 days without a poo. He is putting that milk to good use, growth.

it's quite common for breastfed babies to go 7 days or more without pooing without being constipated. When I does come you better be prepared!!

Unihorn · 14/07/2017 22:33

Mine is formula fed and at her worst was going 10 days in between. When she does go it's rock solid and she is literally screaming for ages, so just keep an eye.

We are now on Movicol and lactulose to get things going but neither work. I wouldn't be concerned just yet!

During a growth spurt, it's not unusual for breastfed babies to make no waste at all. Anything up to 10 days without a poo can be normal.

So long as the poo is soft and yellow when it eventually comes, you have nothing to worry about.

throughgrittedteeth · 14/07/2017 22:39

Thank you - that's all I needed to hear! My first DS never had his so I wasn't sure what was normal. I'm dreading the poonami that comes when he eventually goes!
DP asks me when he gets in from work everyday if he's been, we've built it up so much that when he gets in now, I just say "winter is coming" 😂

If your breastfeeding it's not unusual, dd hardly ever pooed, enjoy it while it lasts once weaning starts they increase in frequency again!

throughgrittedteeth · 14/07/2017 22:41

Well as breastfeeding is supposed to be very efficient I guess it makes sense that there isn't a lot of waste. It's just that he has been going about every 3 hours up until 6 days ago.

DC1 only pooed every 8 or 9 days. I still resent DC2 for being an every other day man - it created so much extra work!
When DC1 did go, there was loads of it (usually up out the back of the neck of her babygro & into her hair) so, after 7 or 8 days, we'd pick a time when we weren't up to much, get a lot of warm water, cotton wool, towels etc ready and then encourage her to go. We'd do this by massaging her tummy and then cycling her legs. Then it would just start oozing out of her. The best thing was to have her on a changing mat with layers of kitchen roll interspersed with layers of newspaper. As she covered a layer of kitchen roll we could slide that off the changing mat, bundle it up whilst she filled the layer below.
DC1 is now 7 & loves hearing about this!

My baby is almost 8 weeks old and he hasn't had a dirty nappy for 4 days. He's breastfed but he does have 1-2 formula bottles at night. He's really straining and produces the smelliest wind. He's produces plenty of wet nappies. On top of it all, he's been throwing up after each meal, mostly it's accompanied by big burps but not always. I burp him a few times during each feed.
Should I be worried and do you have any recommendations on how to relieve his discomfort? Thank you!

Unihorn · 15/07/2017 10:40

If he's throwing up and in discomfort possibly look at the formula you're using. We found Hipp to be the most friendly, ours threw up a lot on Aptamil and Cow and Gate.

Thank you for replying to me so quickly. I will look at the formula and see if that helps. He is mainly breastfed, do you think that the little formula he has is making him sick & unable to produce dirty nappies? Do you think he could have reflux as well? Thank you!

Hi ladies

My daughter is formula fed, originally I expressed and gave formula as I was unsuccessful at breast feeding. She is 8 weeks old and seems to be in pain and strains a lot, but doesn't always poo. She has had hard stools and we are now on lactulose which is making them runny but she is still in pain and discomfort. We use aptimil... could it be the choice of formula? She was being sick a lot too until we were given gavisgon for her. We also tried a reflux milk as recommended. We also give her book booked water as recommended. Just feel like it's been going on a while now and should be sorted.

Any advice would be fab ladies thank you in advance
