Possible TMI - DDs vagina

God, I'm sorry, but it's becoming something that's playing on my mind...

My DD is 8 months and while wiping her, I have noticed that she doesn't seem to have a vagina. She has the labia, the clitoral hood, the urethra... but then it just looks like a pale pinky-purple seam running in a straight line about a cm long down to her perineum. It doesn't seem to open although I haven't wanted to poke about too much and I don't even know if it should open at this age.

Is this normal in a young girl or should I take her to the doctor? It doesn't look like it's stopping her weeing or causing her any bother.

My dad had this! It's called fused labia. I took her to the gp and was referred to hospital where they popped it open with a swab and gave me oestrogen cream to apply. Take her to see your gp and see what they say x

Vajazzler · 13/07/2017 21:28

Not my dad lol. Dd!

Uptownfuckuup · 13/07/2017 21:28

I don't have a dd but I would go to the doctors just to get a second opinion on it
Worst thing they'll tell you is it's fine

Uptownfuckuup · 13/07/2017 21:28

Sorry posted too soon
... and look at you like your bat shit crazy

BarbarianMum · 13/07/2017 21:30

Sounds like a fused labia. Go see the Gp

lougle · 13/07/2017 21:31

She could have fused labia, which isn't terribly uncommon, and if you pop to the GP, they can examine her. If that is the case, they may want to wait and see if they separate on their own, or they may prescribe some oestrogen cream.

Caenea · 13/07/2017 21:36

Haha vajazzler - that's a hell of a typo!

Thanks all - will ring the doctors tomorrow and make an appointment.

Uptown I have to admit the whole look at me like I'm insane is what I was bothered about, so I thought I'd post here first, I hate taking up an appointment if I don't end up needing to, I always end up feeling like I've wasted their time. Not because our GPs are horrible, they're lovely, I just over-think everything!

DD has this. GP looked a bit spooked and referred us to a consultant who told us that it's a fused labia which is pretty common, and generally resolves itself at some point during childhood. He said he could prescribe oestrogen cream but it might close again when the cream was stopped and his preferred approach was to wait rather than giving hormonal cream.

DD is now 2 and it's still fused, I might consider treatment if it's still like this at 6 or 7. In the meantime it's actually quite nice to know poo can't be going into her bits!

Caenea · 13/07/2017 21:42

I've just mentioned it to DP and he's looking at me with a distinct "What the bloody hell, woman" look.

I think he's a bit out of his depth on this one Grin

PS consultant was VERY clear it was nothing at all to worry about and didn't indicate anything wrong "inside" iyswim

minipie · 13/07/2017 21:44

Cross posted! Yes DH had a very "er, this one's your department" view on the whole thing Grin

My Dd had an open vagina until she was about 2.5 when it fused and looked as you describe. I was totally freaked out. I went to the GP who also seemed shocked. She referred us to a paediatrician who said it happens to 1 in 100 girls at some point. It resolved with steroid cream.

Caenea · 13/07/2017 21:47

I know it probably isn't pressing given she is 8mo and not menstruating or needing her vagina at the present time but I am winding myself up about it a bit!

I shall hope the GP says the same Minipie DP has just said he's not getting involved unless it's serious. He looks a bit deer in headlights.

My DD had a fused vagina; I noticed it when she was 6 months old. I took her to the GP and his reaction freaked me out bit because he referred me to a consultant right away' he had never seen or heard of such thing. The consultant told me what it was as soon as I walked it. Then he examined her and proofed himself right. He didn't prescribe anything. He said to massage the area very gently every day with a little bit of vaseline, just for a minute or so. We did and eventually it did open up.

NotAnotheChinHair · 20/07/2017 19:17

Oh and my DD is 10yo now and she's absolutely fine!!

Bb14 · 23/07/2017 21:27

My DD had hers surgically separated as cream didn't work. It's fused again. Only problem now is spraying wee over her potty so she might need another op Confused

shouldnthavesaid · 24/07/2017 08:11

I was born like this , never offered any treatment - they naturally split about 6 weeks before my first period when I was 12. I did have a lot of problems with urine infections though and needed labial surgery a few years later anyway. Dont think its that uncommon though.

Caenea · 25/07/2017 06:15

Hello everyone, huge thanks to all Smile

I am feeling a lot better about it now. We've got the doctor's appt on Friday so hopefully this will either lead to a prescription/advice or a consultant's appt and after that all will go smoothly.
