Adenoidectomy - experiences please

Can anyone whose child has had their adenoids out tell me a bit about their experience please. What were their symptoms prior, did you get referred speedily or did you have a long period of the symptoms not being taken seriously? What was the operation and recovery like?
My 12 month old is due to get this procedure in the next couple of months for snoring and possible sleep apnea

My DD had her adenoids out and grommits in when she was 6. She has lots of bouts of tonsillitis and ear infections over a year or so and snored heavily when sleeping. The op went well and they were really good with her. She recovered well. Very sleepy on the day/day after and sore throat but bounced back very quickly.

DS had his adenoids out in Dec last year when he was just 3. We'd been under ENT since he was one and a half. He had sleep apnoea and hearing loss from glue ear. They also took his tonsils out although this wasn't decided till the day - the consultant hadn't noted the sleep apnoea but they said there was no point doing adenoids without tonsils if that was the case.
We were on waiting list from May to Dec and I pushed in the end as hearing and lack of sleep were taking a toll on him so we got a cancellation.
Op took about 45 mins. Seeing him go under was horrible. He was upset and groggy when came round and we had to stay as he'd had tonsils out and it was late in day but you don't have to stay usually i think.
Recovery was ok - tonsils cause a lot of pain but once he realised meds helped he took them ok and was fine.

Thanks. I think they are just taking her adenoids out and not her tonsils but I've heard they often do together

She's so young - part of me wants to get it done ASAP to get the breathing problems fixed - so we can all sleep and so she can put on weight (work of breathing burning extra calories) and come off the constant antibiotics and we think it's caused high blood pressure on and off in her too, and a couple of ear infections. But part of me thinks she's too little and we could just continue on the antibiotics for another year or so.

How long before your little ones were eating normally again? She doesn't have a lot of weight to loose ATM.

My sisters dd had her adenoids out and grommets fitted at 22 months old this was due to sleep apnoea and severe glue ear, operation was quick and she was discharged the same day as was using her bed as a trampoline when the consultant came round. She stuck to softer food for about half a day till she wanted what her siblings were eating and her hearing improved straight away and no hearing loss was detected on her last audiogram. My sister pushed very hard for this op as they dont like doing it before 2 years old, if they want to do it now on your little one get it done, there has been a 100% improvement allround.

Thank you. That's good to know. I'm only hearing positive stories which is a good thing and very reassuring.

DD had tonsils, adenoids out and grommets in recently. I would say if you can do it before school then all the better. The whole thing took 2 hours and we were home the same day but really late at night. We waited over 2 years after various poor hearing tests etc and finally it got sorted. It's been amazing. No snoring, no hearing issues anymore, she can hear an ant cough now 😆. Also, her sense of smell is so much better. Having the adenoids out can leave a burning flesh breath smell for a few days but it caused her no issues. The tonsils out where the most painful. Also, it's loads better to just get the procedure I would say than having loads of antibiotics. Good luck.

My nephews have had it done and they are doing well . Before they used to have constant issues with breathing on the usual concoction of inhalers , antibiotics, nebs when in hospital etc and where in and out of hospital for the first 2 years of life with both . One of them has no other issues now. One of them still struggles with infections and difficuties breathing. But still a massive improvement as he was in hospital every couple of months before. My dd seems to have similar issues but we are trying to hold off surgery until she is 2 at least as per GP's advice . I am currently considering pulling her out of day care to limit her sources of infection too.

Member thanks - glad it worked out for your nephews.
My main concern is that she is so young - 13 months at the time of the surgery. But the breathing problems are stopping her putting on weight etc. our consultant told us they do after a year old so if she's really bad I guess you could push before 2 but it's a balancing act isn't it

We are happy enough to wait for now as she has managed well so far. Our Gp also gave piriton which has helped with some of the continuous congestion, snoring, sniffles etc which makes sense as both parents and 3 out 4 of granparents have heyfever and other allergies
