Baby eating insane amount - cause for concern?!

My baby is 12 weeks. I know they often have a growth spurt around now, but...

He is mainly breast fed with a bottle before bed. Routine is breastfeed at 5.00, bath at 6.00, bottle after bath and bed at 7.00.

He had a full breastfeed as usual, and normally has about 150 mls from the bottle (more offered, but he's done after 150).

However yesterday he had 250 mls, and today he had 440 mls. Obviously being breastfed I can't tell how much he's had the rest of the day, but has seemed a completely normal amount - same number of feeds and same amount of time taken.

Should I be concerned?! He otherwise seems completely normal and is perfectly happy.

Thanks!

I wouldn't worry babies tend to be quite good at self regulation.

Luckymummy22 · 30/06/2017 19:32

If hes's happy then it probably is just a growth spurt. I would be more concerned if he was unhappy and / or sick a lot as that could be reflux. But he sounds as if he's doing brilliantly.

Have you got Wonder Weeks app? I found that really useful as babies go through leaps too which can affect behaviour. I was doubtful but for my boy he followed it almost to the day.

Thanks for replies. Yes, I do have wonder weeks app and it's fascinating - I agree they almost follow to the day sometimes.

Good to hear, I assumed it was just growth. He's almost visibly bigger every morning at the moment!

The only thing I would say is breastfeeding is quite important during a growth spurt as it's their only way of increasing your supply.

If your supplementing with increasing amount of formula, you won't be keeping up with his breastfeeding needs.

JellyMouldJnr · 30/06/2017 20:31

Agree with refred - if you could possibly limit the bottle your body will start to produce more milk to compensate.

FATEdestiny · 30/06/2017 20:44

440ml is nearly 15oz

Most bottles only hold 9oz (270ml). Are you sure your numbers are right there? Your baby had two almost-full, large sized bottles, one straight after the other in one go?

Is that right?

Or did you give two bottles with some time in between?

Saz467 · 01/07/2017 08:21

Yes, the numbers are definitely right - I kept topping up with 50 mls thinking 'surely this will be the last top up', and he just kept looking for more.

I use expressed milk for his bottle, it's mainly so that he keeps in practice at taking a bottle. And I have def noticed an increase in my yield when pumping the last few days, so I think he must have increased my production. Luckily this meant I had a surplus in the fridge!

saz sorry to side track but just to note I also gave my DS a bottle of expressed milk every day from very early on as was terrified of ending up with a bottle refuser.

The result of the unfortunately was that he self weaned at 6 months as he preferred bottle to breast

I'm sure most babies won't do that but it's something to be aware of if you were wanting to bfeed for ages - I was gutted as had wanted to bfeed til he was a year at least.

Saz467 · 01/07/2017 08:38

Thanks Rodeo

He def prefers breast at the moment, but will bear it in mind.

The nappy this morning was unbelievable! But he's extremely cheerful!

In that case he probably just needs more boobs at 5pm. Maybe switch nurse for a few days so that you've more milk at that feed.
