Croup

Hi
My 3 year old has croup and seems quite poorly. He has it before when he was 2 and he wasn't nearly as unwell, last time he was given steroids and was fine within a couple of days. I took him to docs this morning as he'd been up on/off for most of the night crying and making horrible breathing noises.

Doc says likely mild croup and he will get better in a couple of days. I don't think it's mild at all, he's got a bad bark, completely horse to point his voice is nearly gone, awful raspy breathing when sitting still, barely eating and just wants to cuddle in/do light playing with his train set. I'm terrified of another night as he sounds like he can't breathe...is this normal or should I get him looked at again?

Doc did listen to chest, looked at throats and ears and all clear.

Go to a and e if you are worried.

I find cold air works the best - hard to get in this heatwave!!

Ahd if he's listless and rasping when sitting still too definitely need to go to a and e NOW He needs his oxygen levels monitored.

Don't frighten her! My son gets croup an awful lot. We manage mostly at home. He has only needed steroids a few times. It's sounds absolutely awful
And ultimately u r the best judge of ur child xx

One thing that leaps out of your post is 'Awful raspy breath when sitting still'. My ds2 suffers from croup a lot the rule I follow is if he's struggling with stridor when he's at rest I go to out of hours or A&E.

So if he wakes in a state I try & calm him, try cold air (sit on doorstep) and if after 10/15 mins he's still struggling I go - no messing. A lot of the time it's not as noisey by the time I get there but they've always given him meds without fail.

I'd defo get him seen again if you are worried, one dose of steroids and he'll feel so much better and save you from a stressful sleepless night.

I hope he's feeling better soon croup is awful.

If he's got a stridor at rest (noisy breathing when breathing in) or any other signs of increased work of breathing like sucking in under or around his ribs or at his neck, get him seen straight away. Croup often gets worse at night and no one will ever judge you for getting a child checked.

That doesn't sound right - have you tried boiling a kettle with the lid off on the room to get some moist air?
If that helps, then it might be the answer, but the noisy breathing should settle. If it doesn't, then go to A&E.
