Advice pls! - DD severe vomiting and diarrhoea

Just after advice, as not used to D and V bugs as DD age 6 has mostly escaped them so far, just one or two when younger.

She has been sick 12 times over past 7 hours. Also diarrhoea which she can't control started a couple of hours ago - three
Accidents and she never has accidents!
It smells fishy - sorry tmi!!

She has had three sips of water and can't keep it down. She isn't too bad in herself, up and down with periods of feeling poorly and lying in bed watching tv, but chatting and just a little tired after little sleep.

Wonder if bug or food poisoning? Should we speak to gp or just ride it out and try and get fluids into her? I will get some dioralite (sp?) but doubt she'll drink it. She is bringing fluids up at the moment.

Awful night!!

She will go down very quickly if you can't keep fluids in her. An ice pop?

Sounds like a bug. Sympathy, it's horrid. If she's bringing up little sips her tummy is still v irritated. Sometimes an ice lolly can help and it gets a bit of sugar in too, or a chubby chip lolly even better. Or water with a bit of sugar stirred in. She will probably be ok quite soon, sleep most of the day and then amaze you by how quickly she recovers.

If she is still unable to keep water down by this afternoon might be worth a call to NHS direct for some advice.

Oh and when she's ready to eat, they say BRAT diet - bananas, rice, apples, toast. No milk for a couple of days. I always let mine have biscuits as well when they've been sicky - easy to eat
And a bit sweet to counteract nasty tastes.

Teaspoons of water to start with no big gulps. And try warm ish water. Although when I had a horrible bug a couple of years ago all I wanted was icy cold water apparently it's difficult to keep down.

Once she's feeling better and the d and v has stopped keep her on clear fluids for a few days. I had a moment when I thought I was fine so had a cup of tea. Was not fine.

Bland food, no dairy.

Keep a close eye on her for dehydration. Try 5mls of water & no more every 15mins - and see if that stays in - if not you may be best seeing a doctor. Be quite strict with the 5mls a syringe is good.

Good advice here from NHS website

It says the symptoms usually last less than a week, sometimes longer.

As others have said, it's the dehydration that you have to watch (especially in dc) so a good technique is to set a timer and get them to take a few sips of water every 15 mins - it is surprising how much you can get down them if you perservere with this!

Lots of hand-washing and wiping down of door-handles and surfaces for everyone else!!

I hope your dd feels better soon!

Thank you everyone. Tried ice lolly which she was v enthusiastic about! She then couldn't stomach it. Just used a syringe of water and will keep that up. Fingers crossed!
