One side of neck swollen in 4yo

Noticed my 4yo had a swollen neck today - no pain, tenderness or stiffness and he's generally in great health. Seems to have come out of nowhere and when feeling it it's not like one solid mass, I can feel a few of his glands there and it's obviously a swollen area.

I'll be going to his GP tomorrow, any suggestions of what I should ask for or be concerned about? I'd rather be informed, I just don't know what to look into.

Bump Flowers

I wonder if the doc will suggest wait and see, should I push for tests?

I'm not sure what's this could be. Maybe a blocked gland?

Littlepond · 18/06/2017 18:24

Mumps?

user1496484020 · 18/06/2017 18:25

Mumps maybe or some sort of glandular abscess.

Oddlookingeyes · 18/06/2017 18:27

Blocked salivary gland or branchial cyst (benign, not scary) would be my guess. Is the rest of him ok?

Oddlookingeyes · 18/06/2017 18:29

Keep an eye on him, if swelling continues could affect his breathing. Not trying to scare you, just advising to watch and observe. Photos are good to take.

Thanks all, I'm flummoxed Confused

Feeling it now it feels like a thick muscle or something. Mumps sounds possible. If anything it might have gone down today?

He's in great health and happy in himself ,I'll keep my eye on his breathing thanks for the warning. I've been googling symptoms of the scary stuff, he seems fine for everything else they warn about.

I've been on my toes all day about it and he doesn't seem to have a head turn or anything.

Hi

Not sure what it could be but I would phone nhs direct for advice tonight. It certainly seems like something that would warrant an out of hours gp appointment.

It's great that he's well in himself but I would still call them for advice.

Hope you get answers xxx

Thanks all, the doctor had a really good feel and said there were 2 small glands there and the area around was slightly puffy but he wasn't concerned as the glands themselves are very small. I'm to go back if it gets bigger but he's not expecting it to.

I noticed today when my son tipped his head back one large gland that's not really easily felt when his head is straight on. I've booked him back in on Monday for a second opinion.

I can still feel the 2 small glands the doctor was referring to, this is different. I'm not sure if some swelling has gone down slightly allowing the gland to be more visible than it was.

I'm still worried.

My son had similar at the same age. GP did refer to hospital where they just monitored and then discharged with antibiotics (precautionary, nothing wrong with him, no high temp etc). They did draw around the lump with felt pen so it was easier to see that the swelling was reducing. They couldn't give a reason fror the swelling.

Fauxgina · 23/06/2017 19:57

Thank you Flowers

My dad had similar when she was young. She was given antibiotics and a couple of weeks to allow it to settle. When it didn't we had a referral for blood tests and ultrasoun. It turned out to be glandular fever.

Most these things are harmless, sort selves out. Try not to worry & see a GP early next week if no better.

Hi, I’m reaching out because I have a two year old who has a lump on the side of his neck. I just found it early Sunday morning and it seemed to have come out of nowhere and it seems like I’m going through the similar situation you went through. I took him to the hospital where they did a CT scan and an ultrasound- nothing alarming showed up and they just gave me antibiotics to give him. We went to his dr for a checkup and they didn’t seemed too concerned either I was just told it’s just enlarged lymph nodes but I’ve felt it and it seems like a muscle?? I was reading your post and was hoping if you ever got any answers?
thanks 😊
