8yr old daughter vagina discomfort

jollygreenmama · 13/06/2017 18:35

Occasionally but this week twice, my daughter wakes in the night complaining of 'soreness' 'itchiness' at the opening to her vagina. on these occasions it looks a bit redder than normal (not that i look everyday of course). I usually give her some calpol, she sits opened legged with a cool flannel for bit and then I apply some 'bum cream' sudacream. After a little time she quietens it calms and she goes back to sleep and in the morning there is no mention.

It has previously happened if she's had fizzy sweets, haribo, or fizzy drink so we limit these and if she does consume such things we get her to drink lots of water in the hope it waters her wee down and it seems to be successful.

BUT this week she hasn't had anything fizzy or super sweet and yet she's woke twice. It has also happened after she's tried to have poo in the evening, she sits for a bit then a bit comes, she carries on with what she's doing then it happens again. I'm not sure if she's confusing the sensations down there or if she is a bit constipated and the pushing aggravates something?

She did suffer with constipation when younger but with enough fruit and water being consumed this is now rare.

Has anyone else had the same trouble? or does anyone have any ideas?

It so distressing for her, she is a bit of a wimp but discomfort is discomfort, to her everything 'hurts a lot' :-(

Hope someone can help. Thank you!

One of my dds has suffered with this, it seems to have stopped since I've bought her wet toilet wipes for sensitive skin. I get them from children's section in Tesco.

Threadworms. My DD complained of the same thing and I had a good look down there and found she had threadworms.

ShowOfHands · 13/06/2017 18:50

DD had exactly the same complaint. It was threadworms. They come out at night and irritate the whole area. It went on for months on and off before I spotted an actual worm.

oh my goodness! Ladies thank you so much for this, I'm going to take a proper look tonight. I believe you can get over the counter medicine? Do your girls get it every night? Its a bit more sporadic for mine.... Thank you Thank you!

Or thrush?

oxfordanonymous · 13/06/2017 19:12

Always worms here too with those symptoms; sorry Flowers

We were fine last night but are currently having an episode! Do I take her to the doctor?

Worms! I've agonised over this many a long night. You need Ovex to get rid of the worms. In the past though, when I've not had ovex, I've used antihistamine and I've found having a wee helps dd.

reallyanotherone · 14/06/2017 22:06

Buy ovex from the chemist.

Wash everything. Baths- no bubbles or soap, plain water, some epsom salts if you have them.

If that doesn't work and you've already cut out sweets (and fruit, it's fruit and fruit juice that sets it off for us), trip to the gp.

PandaG · 14/06/2017 22:08

If it is threadworms, and that would indeed be my first thought; they do easily migrate from back to front, then chemist can sell you tablets. Don't buy pripsen worm powder (if still available). I can't face anything raspberry flavoured after having to choke that down as a child.

imip · 14/06/2017 22:09

Btw, I can rarely see them, I've NEVER seen them in poo, but dd has got them out when scratching.

Dd has ASD and lots of OCD like symptoms, so I cannot wash her sheets (but at least having worms finally made her use sheets). But I think you should hot was linen for good measure.

Dangermouse80 · 14/06/2017 22:15

Could be thrush or cystitis if she is a bit dehydrated. Used to get both as a kid.

jollygreenmama · 14/06/2017 22:26

I've just seen a couple of worms 😭 Calling doc first thing in the morn. For now I have smothered her bits in sudacream in the hope they get gunged up and stop moving. Will give her some Benydryl. Thank you all, so helpful.

You don't need to see the doctor. You can get Ovex over the counter. Get her to take her pants off carefully in the morning (so the eggs don't spread) and then straight into the bath to wash away the eggs. Do this every morning for the next fortnight. Boil wash towels, flannels and bedclothes. Damp dust everywhere. Repeat Ovex in two weeks.

cherrychop · 14/06/2017 22:33

My dd has just recovered from threadworms. It was horrendous she was screaming in so much pain. The doctor will give you a oral solution enough for the whole family. You all have to take it even if you have no symptoms. The first night she might still have discomfort but should be better by night 2. Bath her every morning and dettol all the door handles and surfaces. Wash all her clothes and towels thoroughly and rinse well. Keep nails short and use a nail brush. Wash hands before every meal and after using toilet . Wash bedding regularly and vacuum thoroughly. Do this for at least 2 weeks after taking medicine. Sorry if you allready do some of those things I'm just highlighting tips on how we got rid of threadworms. Hope your dd feels better soon

jollygreenmama · 15/06/2017 14:57

Thank you again all, have stripped the house & am washing everything. Good tip about door handles! Have the dose & will give to her in a mo.
