Hello MNers,

I guess I'm posting for some advice really.

My daughter is 2 and I am pretty certain she has a cold sore. I don't know where she would have got it from. As far as we are aware DH and I have never had one and I'm very particular to not let people kiss her whom I know have the virus.

I am far from ignorant to the fact that it is a super duper common virus that the vast majority of the population carry.

However, dice I was pregnant it was one of my thins that I so desperately wanted to stop her from catching and now it looks like she has it.

It popped up yesterday afternoon and is getting redder and angrier and she keeps asking what it is and touching it. I am washing her hands frequently.

I just feel so upset and feel like I have let her down. I know in the grand scheme of things, worse things happen. But I feel so sick from this in the pit of my stomach. I didn't protect her from it and now she has it.

I am seeing the doctor tomorrow morning to get a confirmation but I already know.

Is anyone else in the same boat?

Thank you

My two year old daughter gets break outs of cold sores in her mouth when she's had extended illnesses. The first time was worse but last time not so bad. The dr said that when their immune system has been working hard to fight illness it lets the cold sore virus rear it's head. As far as I am aware no one in our family has has cold sores but she is at Childcare.

You definitely have not let her down! It's part and parcel of being a kid and building their immune system up that they'll pick up viruses and bugs.

It's tricky keeping her hands away though. Maybe the dr can prescribe something that coats it - like compeed?

What are you worried about?
My DC2 has had cold sores since infancy... no one else in the family gets them which leads me to believe that we are all ( or certainly I and other DC) herpes positive.
It is a minor nuisance and no more than that ... don't let it bother you

I read on here that tea tree oil was good for healing cold sores, so when I started getting one a few weeks ago I tried it. I dabbed some on a few times during the evening and again before bed, and the next morning there was no sign of it. I'm not sure if it would be a bit strong for a 2 y.o.'s skin but hopefully someone else who does know will come along. HTH.
