Out of control crying

Hi,

My son is 4 weeks old and for the last 3 nights at around 7pm he has cried uncontrollably for about an hour and nothing will settle him. I check his bum, give him a bottle even though he just ate, he wasn't interested and he has burped and farted.

Finally he will settle in my arms but drops off to sleep for 5-10 mins at a time before being resettled.

I'm wondering if it could be trapped wind but would that happen at the same time of day? Also he's having infacol so is there anything else I can try?

I'm a new mum so would appreciate any advice.

Colic, or overtired / overstimulation would be my guess.
Try sticking him in a fairly tight sling and going for a walk outside.

I wrapped him in a blanket and laid him on my chest and he's been asleep since I posted my query. I don't think it's over tiredness as he's slept well today, maybe overstimulated? Either way I'm glad he's sleeping well, I hate it when he's so upset!

My 3 have all had horrible colic - with screaming for 4-6 hours every evening for a few weeks. But they've also all had CMPI which probably didn't help.
If it is colic then what helped us most was swaddling or sling, and getting moving outside. Inside didn't help. Also headphones or ear defenders for me as they could feel my stress which made it worse, but if I blocked out the screaming a bit, I relaxed, and they did.

Glad you got him settled well tonight Flowers

We had this with DS, called it the witching hour. Same time every night and the only thing that worked (occasionally) was holding him against my shoulder and singing 'oh what a night' to him! God knows why!
DH would also take him out in the buggy, fresh air and movement did the trick.
Your baby is still brand new and getting used to the world.
If it is wind, lying him on your knees and cycling legs might help. Xx

Thanks for your replies, it might be wind as he also has another "witching hour" during his middle of the night feed after which he grunts and groans until the morning! It's killing me! (I've been up since 0230 and it's now 0615!)
If I lay him face down on my chest he's quiet as a lamb - on his back in his Moses basket he will not settle fully and makes noises for hours!
Thanks for the sympathy- it helps knowing I'm not alone! 🙂

Google purple crying it might be worth a look. This happened with my eldest.

QuestionableMouse · 05/06/2017 06:45

Might be reflux. Worth a trip to your GP imo. They can give meds to help.

Well purple crying is a cheerful read! Don't get me wrong it makes perfect sense but the thought that there is just nothing you can do to stop the crying is quite depressing! Am I the only one who thought mums could fix all their babies problems? 😂
