Advice needed on 2yr old with symptoms that I can't diagnose!

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone can help me with some symptoms my daughter has but I haven't a clue what they are or where they stem from. She is 2yrs old and about twice a day (sometimes more) she will suddenly freak out shaking, like she's terrified and I mean her whole body stiffens up and shakes; there is no consoling her and it's like she's being electrocuted, the way she clings to either the floor or wall. Her heartbeat gets so fast and it clearly 'winds' her as well as when she is calming down she has a coughing bout. Once it's over with, and it lasts about 30 seconds, she then continues quite happily with whatever she was doing! I'm completely baffled as these occurrences tend to come on for no reason, can wake her from a daytime nap, whilst she is playing, watching TV or sitting in the car - anytime really! I used to think they were connected with maybe a tummy-ache or something but I'm not so sure anymore and I am worried in case I should be taking her the doctors about it. I haven't as yet as it's hard to describe something or diagnose something that you can see as other than this she is perfectly fine! Has anyone else's child had this happen to them?

I would be bringing her to the GP tomorrow in fairness.

Go to the doctor asap, a fast heartbeat etc needs checking out. Film one on your phone if you can?

PurpleWithRed · 01/06/2017 22:59

Go to the gp. Ideally with a video of her doing this.

MrsELM21 · 01/06/2017 23:00

Definitely get to the GP and film it if you can

CowParsleyNettle · 01/06/2017 23:00

Your child sounds like she is fitting, I would advise you to see a GP.

TheObserverOne · 01/06/2017 23:01

Definitely GP! Doesn't sound like anything I've ever heard.

WyfOfBathe · 01/06/2017 23:01

It sounds like a panic attack, but then I would expect her to be upset afterwards as well although I'm not really sure how panic attacks manifest in toddlers.

I would take her to see the GP.

HeyRoly · 01/06/2017 23:02

That's very strange. Try to get one of these episodes on video if you can. And yes, talk to the GP quite urgently and emphasise how many times a day this happens. My first thought (and I have NO medical qualifications whatsoever so please take with a pinch of salt) are that they could be a kind of seizure. So don't think it's not worth bothering a GP about, because it definitely is.

flapjackfairy · 01/06/2017 23:02

Could well be seizures. They take many forms. Video an incident and go to gp asap x

I have thought of filming one but when I see it happening I'm trying so hard to calm her down and help her that I feel guilty even thinking about filming her like this; however it may be the only way to show a doc. They come on so suddenly too I sometimes don't have my phone to hand at the time. It's how fast her heartbeat goes that worries me the most as well and is why I needed to check this out on here hoping to find some sort of reason why. You've all confirmed though that I do need to go get this looked at and if u dont get a video at least describe this to a doc. Thank you for your speedy replies xxx

I know it must be hard to take a video at the right moment, but that's not essential.

dancingtinky1 · 01/06/2017 23:10

Re: seizures, as she is so 'normal' afterwards is this likely to be the case? I had thought of a panic attack myself as well but ruled this out as she's only 2yrs old and of all my 3 children she is the most confident, outgoing child who is full of beans most days?! Probably wrong of me to come to this conclusion so quickly, but I'd have expected anxieties to show in other situations as well if it was a panic attack? I'm just baffled! But will get a GP appt tmoz xx

Take her asap. Might be something neurological they need to check out and prevention is better than cure.

Hi dancing. How is your daughter? Did gp provide any help ?
