Is this scarlet fever? (Pictures)

Just trying to figure out if my DD's rash could be scarlet fever. There has been one child in her childcare setting in the last week who has a confirmed diagnosis of it.

DD (16mo) has been very congested/snotty for about a week and has a cough. When she wakes it sounds like she needs to clear her theist but can't. She has been very miserable recently with teething (molars) and has been waking up crying in the night which is unlike her.

First saw the rash this morning on her tummy and there were 2 very small 'blotches' on either side of her torso. It was a very small patch and I thought it might be heat rash or similar.

As the Day has worn on it has spread over most of her body including behind the knees, elbows etc but seemingly not on her face or neck.

She hasn't eaten any different/unusual foods as far as I can remember and hasn't had a change of detergent or anything like that.

Just wondered if anyone has any experience with SF or thinks they can identify the rash? I'm aware this isn't a medical forum so just looking for sharing experiences/info if you have it.

I'd suggest it was more viral. Does she have a sore throat or spotty tongue?

DS is currently covered in a very similar rash, which they initially thought was scarlet fever, but turns out to be viral.

Has she got a temperature/fever?

My son had this aged 8. He had a raging fever and the rash was much angrier. He was really very ill. You may know this, but it all comes from the streptococcus bacteria. If you are concerned they can swab her throat to be sure. I would probably take her to the docs.

When dd had it the dr said the telltale sign is the red angry rash on the face in a certain shape. Rash less on body and red blotches rather than pinprick. So keep an eye on her face!!

If it is though you need to get anti b's and it goes pretty quickly.

Thanks all.

She hasn't early had a fever at all - last night was 37.8 so gave calpol (also for the teething as she really is suffering).

I think I will take her to Drs just to be safe but was under the impression it might be viral due to her cold symptoms.

Have been reading up about it and yes strep is the most likely cause I think.

Strep is what causes scarlet fever, so a bacteria.

The imagine doesn't look red and raised enough for scarlet fever, I'd suspect it was just viral as well.

When DS had SF I first noticed the rash on his torso. It feels quite rough to the touch. Iirc it's described as feeling like sandpaper and that was a pretty accurate description of what DS' felt like.

I was just coming on to say scarlet fever rash is rough. My dd had it and it did feel like sandpaper.
She also had a temp and a sore throat, she had to have a 10 day course of antibiotics.

DinkyGT · 21/05/2017 09:25

It doesn't feel rough and isn't as red this morning so I'm thinking viral and will see a dr tomorrow if it persists. She seems fine in herself and I'm pretty sure she hasn't got a sore throat and no fever.

Thanks so much for commenting everyone, I appreciate it Smile
