Decay between teeth

Hi all
just wondering if anyone could offer any advice. My DD6 is having a dental checkup soon and her dentist wants to take xrays of her teeth to check for decay between them. She said this is usually done about age 6. I understand decay which is in between the teeth may not be detected by visual examination if it's a very small area, but does anyone know if more significant decay/larger cavities can be seen by visual examination alone? So if there is any decay found is it likely to be minimal? Hope that make sense! Thanks.

Not necessarily minimal OP. The decay ( caries) "in between teeth"can be wide ranging in size, that is minimal to deeply decayed lesions. These type of lesions won't necessarily affect both teeth either side of the contact point.
