Stomach pains for 6 weeks

Kimchelseaashmead · 08/05/2017 11:06

Just before Easter my daughter, who is nearly 5, started to complain of stomach pain on and off throughout the day, everyday.. a couple of days later, she was seen in out of hours for constipation (she has never suffered with this before). Whilst being seen, they also diagnosed her with a urine infection. She was treated for both - the urine infection cleared up and she started going to the toilet. However, she was still getting the pains all day every day. We've been to the doctors a couple of times over the last few weeks who said it was still constipation, although shes going to the toilet! On Wednesday last week I took her to A&E because the pain was getting severe and the doctors didn't seem interested. They checked her over and said she has another urine infection - two in a month! They have also said the pains coming all day on and off were possibly IBS. We are awaiting an ultrasound on her kidneys and they also said to use peppermint oil for the stomach pains... Nearly a week later and she is still suffering with the pains on and off all day long. Has anyone else had anything similar? It seems strange to me that the pains first started with the constipation, that has cleared.. but the pains haven't! Thank you

If she had constipation she could have stretched the bowel? sounds dramatic but apparently can happen. Perhaps she is getting pains from the stool moving? I'm in a similar situation with DD and not getting answers. Gp has put dd on movicol to loosen the stools so her bowel doesn't have to work so hard. We've not had an improvement though so I'm not much help Im afraid.

When you say stomach pains, do you mean her stomach (in the centre just beliw ribs) or lower down?

Constipation can take a long time to cure but I'd be nervous about the repeated urine infections. What are you using to treat the constipation?

Ignore any suggestions of IBS. IBS is what gets diagnosed after everything else has been excluded and you're not at that point.

If i were you I'd start by going back to the GP who may run further tests.

You should consider also a dairy allergy and/or referred pain from a back injury! Cut out dairy and see a chiropractor!

BarbarianMum · 09/05/2017 18:40

Sorry to disagree but if we are thinking allergy/intolerance it could be caused by any number of things, not just dairy. I'd suggest the OP gets some further medical advice and appropriate testing before just excluding whole food groups.

Dairy most common and easiest to try!(also know first hand it can be the cause!)

My son had a problem whereby he wasn't properly constipated but he wasn't clearing his bowel properly as it had got stretched when he had been constipated previously. It was found when he went for a x-ray/scan related to pneumonia and they picked it up then.

OnlyaBitStressed · 09/05/2017 22:22

How was it pneumonia related? And what did they do?

BarbarianMum · 09/05/2017 22:23

Avoiding all dairy is not that easy - I know, i did it for 3 years w ds1. I'd say gluten rather than dairy for most common and that's not easy either - I was diagnosed with coeliac disease 5y ears ago.

High odds that she's got undertreated constipation. How long was she treated with what? And how often does she pass what consistency of poo now? You might find the ERIC website useful.

My daughter (5) had the same a few months back, was told it was constipation by an out of hours dr and then spiked a fever a day later (40 degrees and shivering) and it was a uti. I had been concerned it was appendicitis. She had the same on Sunday and I took her straight to gp for antibiotics with a urine sample.

Warning TMI!
Sorry if I wasn't clear. It was entirely unrelated to the pneumonia. Just discovered it when they were X-ray ing his lungs. Basically they could see compacted poo and he had stretched his colon (?) if that is where poo is stored. On a day to day basis he wasn't totally constipated, he was just not clearing enough out if you see what I mean. Apparently causes a lot of pain. He had it in and off for 3 years😳.

Indaba · 11/05/2017 00:02

Oh, and should add, to get rid if it put him on 2 weeks if laxatives type stuff which basically cleared him out slowly over a few datts. All fine now. They did say v common in kids. X-ray person had seen it a lot in kids and said it's really painful.

Indaba · 11/05/2017 00:04

Over a few days.....not datts! sorry, not got my glasses on.
