When do you take a vomiting child to the doctors?

DS (7) started complaining of a tummy ache on Friday morning and was then copiously sick all day. He seemed to be on the up on Saturday morning but was then sick again all afternoon. Today, we thought he had completely recovered and was back to his usual cheeky self, but at teatime, he complained again of tummy ache and was sick several times.
When do you take them to the doctors with a tummy bug? I don't want to infect the whole waiting room if it's a particularly virulent bug, but equally, it seems to have been hanging around for a while and I know tummy bugs are normally gone sooner than this. Any advice?

If you are unable to keep them hydrated. All they can really treat for his dehydration. If he weeing?

Sleeperandthespindle · 07/05/2017 20:15

Maybe just give the surgery a call tomorrow? I once had to have an anti sickness injection and the doctor came to give it at home.

Sorry that was written terribly

Is his tummy sore to the touch anywhere? My friend's daughter had sickness and really sore tummy for a few days, they held off from taking her to gp and she ended up with burst appendix and very poorly in hospital on drip / antibiotics for a week.

Not saying it's this with your dc, but only you will know how poorly he seems compared to normal. I'd suggest a call to NHS direct to explain his symptoms and see what they suggest.

Best of luck and hope he's on the mend soon.

That's what I thought, about the weeing. We had a memorable moment earlier when he was weeing and being sick almost simultaneouslyConfused
Is there a point where you should take them to make sure it's only a bug and nothing more hideous?

Thank you - that's what I'm a bit worried about. Three days seems a long time for a tummy bug.

Don't take them . Phone instead. This happened to us . They may either prescribe anti sickness drugs or see you without having to sit in waiting room .
Hope he's ok.

helensburgh · 07/05/2017 20:23

The bug we had was awful
4 days for me. 3 for another child and 6 fir the baby.
Hope he's ok

I think you should get further advice... think it is 111 now.

Squishedstrawberry4 · 07/05/2017 20:25

If he's seeing and pooing, I wouldn't stress just yet

Squishedstrawberry4 · 07/05/2017 20:25

Weeing not seeing

Scootergrrrl · 07/05/2017 20:28

Still seeing Wink although asleep now so maybe not! Thank you for the advice and good wishes - it's throwing me off a bit that he seems so well (trampolining with his brother, being cheeky etc) and then a couple of hours later, he's throwing up AGAIN!

Three days is normal for a bug.
If he's not ill just let him sip fluids and suck lollies.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 07/05/2017 20:31

In my experience the only time NHS will be interested in vomiting (in isolation) IE important enough to see ooh or ane is when it's either dark green or black vomit as it may indicate a bowel blockage. Anything else, even inability to hold down water, they're pretty relaxed about until about three/four days in without holding down fluids, when they may consider intravenous fluids especially if there's a raised temp too.

Scootergrrrl · 07/05/2017 20:33

That's just what I needed to hear - we can ride it out with water and ice lollies as long as it's nothing to be worried about. Thank you Smile

I wouldn't unless they were dehydrated or in lots of pain. I took Dd a few weeks ago because she was curled up in a ball crying with pain around her belly button along with vomiting and fever but it was the pain that made me take her. where she vomited in the waiting room and everyone glared at me

Witchend · 09/05/2017 14:20

I've only taken one of mine to the dr with vomiting. He'd just had a grommet op 2 days previously and was antibiotics because his temperature had come up.
I phoned and they said to come in straight away. Ds took one look at the doctor and went to sleep on the floor and they told me to take him to A&E quickly.
He was fine a few hours later.

If he hadn't just had the operation and was on antibiotics I wouldn't have taken him though. I'd have dosed him on rehydration stuff at home, which is all they did at hospital.
