toddler ill every month or so - is this normal?

Between the ages of 1-2 (started nursery at 1) DS caught every illness going - I honestly used up nearly all of my annual leave staying home to look after him when he was too poorly for nursery (as did DH) and even on our only holiday he was sick.
Nothing major apart from chicken pox, just high temps/D&V etc.

I assume this is par for the course (GP said they are always ill between 1 and 2 and he wasn't kidding!) and since DS turned 2 it has got a bit better. However looking back I realise he's still been off nursery about once a month, usually for a few days. Either temp or D&V again (currently on day 4 of sickness that's going round nursery). Is this a lot?
Since our working arrangements changed I've not noticed it quite as much but that still seems fairly often for an otherwise healthy boy. He eats and sleeps well and has no ongoing health complaints.

I think young children on average get about 10 colds a year. Regular colds are normal although not all would normally be severe enough to need time off nursery.
Regular D&V would give me some concerns regarding hygiene standards at the nursery. D&V has only tended to affect mine about once a year.

Hm, thanks, food for thought! I should clarify it's usually either vomiting or runny nappies, not usually both in the sense of food poisoning etc.

Nursery are lax about runny noses etc (this might be a reason too...) but if he's been sick we leave it 48 hours and if he has a temp and seems unhappy they ask us to collect him.

My friend's child is in the same room at nursery and has also been ill recently (with the same bug, I assume) yet has been well enough to go on a day out whereas I couldn't with mine. I wonder if he gets more affected than others?

I think some children do take illness harder than others. DD1 always became very ill with colds and viruses. Everything goes to her chest, she gets recurrent tonsillitis, vomits with colds and temps. Just awful.
However DD2 is a sturdy thing. She will catch the sniffles but rarely gets fevers, continues to sleep and eat well, rarely gets a cough etc.
They have the same diet etc so I'm not sure why this is, but agree regarding the D&V. That sounds quite a lot to be getting it! Maybe try probiotics? I've got the girls on abidec and they do really well on them.
