Speech delay and Laryngomalacia

Hi, hoping someone can offer some experience here.
My DD, who is now 2 1/2, was diagnosed with a floppy voice box (laryngomalacia) when she was a few months old. She had been suffering with silent reflux and once we finally managed to see the paediatrician at about 6 months, he said that she had a mild form of laryngomalacia. This explained her very noisy rattly breathing and advised that it would all but disappear by the time she was 2 years old. To a certain extent it has, and we only hear the rattly chesty noises when she has a cold (not confused with a chest infection!) However, she has come to the attention of the health visitor now as her speech is really delayed. She never babbled as a baby and we very rarely get mummy or daddy. She will say yes and no clearly but absolutely nothing else! She tries very hard to say things but it always comes out more of a grunt and everything sounds the same. She clearly thinks that's she is saying something and gets really frustrated when we have absolutely no idea what she is saying.
She has been referred for speech and language therapy, but there is a 12 month waiting list. We've had an assessment with a speech and language therapist, but it's only crossed my mind today that it could be related to the laryngomalacia Hmm I have phoned the lady today that we saw and she's going to look into it.
Does anyone have any experience of this?

Well, ds2 (now 19) had laryngomacia and a speech delay but I had never considered that there may be a link. Ds3 (10) also had it but more mildly and didn't have delayed speech so I don't really know.

ThatsWotSheSaid · 09/04/2017 21:27

My DS has laryngomalacia and has no language delays. Could you pay for a SLT assessment? 1 year is ridiculous.

ThatsWotSheSaid · 09/04/2017 21:30

Sorry I've re-read and seen you've been assessed but the wait is for sessions. What does the SLT say is the diagnosis?

2014newme · 09/04/2017 21:30

My dd didn't have a speech delay but she did have a vocal chords issue which caused her to be quite hoarse. Consultant referred for speech therapy and she started straight away. Our medical insurance paid for it. 6 months later was sorted. Do you have medical insurance?

nocoolnamesleft · 09/04/2017 23:34

Get your GP to also refer you to ENT, to check out her larynx?

Skisunsnow · 10/04/2017 09:23

Thanks for your replies. I am still waiting for the report from the SLT initial assessment. I've got a GP appt in 4 weeks as they don't deem it urgent for a booked on the day appointment 🙄. Will phone again tomorrow morning and see if I speak to a different receptionist!

My son was speech delayed for a different reason - cleft lip and palate, and never babbled either. Have you thought about makaton (sign language) in the mean time? It definitely stopped my boy from becoming too frustrated, and at one point he had about 120 signs he could use. Now he is talking he uses them less, but will revert to them if someone else isn't understanding what he is trying to say.

I know this was posted a year ago. But I'm going through the exact same thing. Everything you've described is my little boy Oliver. He's 18months old.
He had Larynmolacia diagnosised at 3 months old. He's now doesn't constantly rattle but he does when he has a cold to the point it hospitialise him. He has it every 4 weeks. Sometimes it will turn into a chest infections so he's on constant antibiotics that have now weakened his immune system. They believe Oliver suffers from silent reflux so we are due to see reflexology. He's under a swollowing and speech therapist. He's still on 4month soft foods atm and still no speech other than the babbling. They saying because he's poorly for so long it's delayed his development. He's today seen ENT they've now transferred him for a hearing test and a throat camera. He said they just grow out of it but it's sooo not fair. My poor little boy suffers with this for 2 weeks at a time. Constantly doses on Calpol ibruphen and inhalers.
I just wanna help him the best I can.
Look forward to hearing the update!! X

hi my boy was diagnosed with laryngomalacia since he was 20days old and its severe that he had reflux every feeding, so he was fed thru OGT (thru oral tube) til 1 1/2yrs old.
our pulomonologist suggested for him to be always in an inclined position to lessen the possibility of reflux, weve been in and out of the hospital on his first 6 mos due to pneumonia, he didnt pass his hearing test at few months bec of noisy breathing, he also cant swallow bec it was discovered that his larynx and vocal structure had severe swelling due to constant reflux, his vocal flap doesnt close bec of swelling he always had aspiration, he was given Prednisone for that and was also under antibiotics most of the time, he also did nebulization 3 to 4 times a day with salbutamol and combivent alternately, his gastrologist had him fed thru a syringe infusion pump attached to his OGT to monitor slow but frquent feedings, we used Aptamil milk (thickened milk) to avoid refluxes. He was kinda restrained in bed for a year bec of it and thats why he has motor & oral delays. He had been in Physical therapy & Occupational therapy at age 1.5hrs old after he finally started bottle feeding and eating soft blended food, He is now 5yrs old but still has delays in both motor and oral, he doesnt talk and only cam say "momma" when he wants my attention, he usually communicate with gestures & we kinda started learning sign language besides still having Speech therapy and OT. i was told by his ENT that his oral/jaw muscles are still weak due to under stimulations & no
chewing movement since birth til he was 1.5yrs old, he needs to build muscle strength, and im positive he is improving everyday, he is a happy and energetic child, he loves to play and hums to music. I guess it takes time and patience, they will outgrow and get stronger on their own too, my son couldnt walk til he was 2 and just started jumping this year and he thinks he is doing something amazing :))

Hi, I know it's a long shot, but I was researching for my little one with Laryngomalacia and saw your post. Do you have an update? Did your little one learn to talk? Your post perfectly described my 18month son. He has been diagnosed with it and is very speech delayed. He only grunts and says "mom" for everything. It's his only word. He too had silent reflux as an infant, and spit up a ton. He could hardly even cry or make any noises. He is very smart and interactive and affectionate. He lives music and is super responsive. But, no words! Nothing! I hope your little one has caught up to where he need to be or that you got some answers.

Hello, pls pls if you can reply here on my comment pls reply,we had a same issue. My baby doesnt babble or coo. He is turning 1 in 2 weeks. I suspect that he has a laryngomalacia because of he's noisy breathing and no speech at all. He didnt even have a voice when he cries. I visited a lot pediatrician and 1 of them told me that maybe he has a laryngomalacia and he will outgrow it.fwe dont have any treatment for now, because my only issue he's noisy breathing and no voice.😔

Jaz18 · 12/02/2021 12:53

@Momofnine hi is there anyway i can talk with you in private? Pls i really need someone who i can talk to with this issue. :(

Momofnine · 13/02/2021 06:53

Hi, yes I can totally relate. I'm so sorry that your are going through this too. It is so hard to watch our little ones struggle and to be blown off by doctors. We are actually going to a different ENT on Monday to get a second opinion. Highly suggest getting an optuc camera inside to see what is going on, just in case there are more issues. Our little guy hasn't gained weight in 6 months. Now that I'm not nursing him anymore feedings are really sporadic and he doesn't drink very much. He has become more vocal now at 17 months, but still no words. Just a range of sounds, grunts, and Momma.

Jaz18 · 13/02/2021 12:54

@Momofnine hi,thanks for replying! does ENT told you something about he's speech and what is the reason behind it? why they had no voice? Because that's my mainly issue :( i think my lo kinda improve he's breathing,he only had a noisy breathing when he was really active or excited. I would love to hear more from you. Thank you

Momofnine · 13/02/2021 23:02

Our ENT did not make the correlation. I have just read a lot of comments from others about how they are related. Something about when they have a hard time chewing/swallowing they don't use the me uscles enough that you need to strengthen to be able to learn to talk because they use the same type of muscles. but I am going to I bring it up at my next appt for sure, hope that helps.

Ndavoudian · 08/12/2021 11:32

Hi there moms!

I have a 9 month old baby girl with Larngomalacia.
Her breathing is still a little loud for sure, she is grunty, she cooed as a little baby but since six months she’s become very into grunts, now screeching, yelling, but no NO consonant sounds
We for ent throat cam and confirmed diagnosis ans we are in a speech pathologist once a week, we just started.

Has anyone had success with getting their babies to babble?

LovingLife83 · 09/09/2022 07:43

Hi! I know this post is 5 years old, but the story of your daughter describes the story of my son, who is 3, and still has no words. I am confident it is not a cognitive issue and he communicates well despite being non-verbal. Nevertheless, I am sending this message in hopes to learn about how daughter's speech and abilities are now that she is significantly older. Is there any insight you gained or important steps along your journey? Any information would be so greatly appreciated. Hope all is well with you and your family.

LaraMaria · 14/09/2024 17:56

Yes, he's two years old now, he's saying words, he's a happy healthy kid. Laryngomalacia disappeared at 18 months old. My heart is with you, have patience.

LaraMaria · 16/10/2025 02:30

Did you experience drooling after your baby turned 2 years old (baby with laryngomalacia)? I'm wondering if they are connected in any way🤔
