My son is 2y6mos. He started to get unwell on Saturday night and he seems to have got progressively worse.
I have had a nasty chesty cough for the last 2 weeks and although I tried not to pass it on I assumed he caught it because on Saturday evening he started chesty coughing as well. He went to bed around 8 and woke me up at 12.30, crying. I went to him and he was very hot to touch so I gave him some Calpol and cold milk and he went back to sleep. The next morning he slept until after 9 (so 13ish hours, he normally has about 11) and woke up with a raspy voice but seemed alright in himself.
Yesterday:
He normally hardly ever naps any more, but about 3 hours after waking up he was rubbing his eyes and getting irritable. He refused any lunch, and was falling asleep by 1 so I put him in bed. I went in to check on him regularly, he kept waking up, crying and going back to sleep. He seemed hard to properly rouse and a bit confused. He was on and off very hot and when I took his temperature it fluctuated between 37.6 (ok) and 38.6 (not ok) with an under arm thermometer.
He slept the whole afternoon and night.
Today
He woke up a couple of times in the night and I got up with him at 4am, but all he wanted to do was flop and cuddle and wouldn't eat any breakfast. I could tell he couldn't stay awake and he was nodding off. I kept trying to tempt him with different food but he was really shaking his head and going "no" to even treat-type food. He fell asleep at 9am so again I put him in bed. When I heard him rousing at 2pm (he was asking for more milk) I got him up to give him a wash, brush his teeth and change his clothes. I was really worried that he hadn't eaten in 24 hours so I sat him on my lap and spoon fed him some soup and soldiers. I got up to wash up and he fell asleep at the table! I tried to get him interested in his toys but he lay down on the rug and went back to sleep. I could tell he was hot again so took his temperature, he was 38.1. Eventually I let him lie on the sofa and watch telly for a while, he dozed in and out. Near bed time I gave him some Calpol and made him some scrambled egg, but he took one look at it and threw up most of the soup he ate earlier. I gave him a quick shower and put him to bed again with water in a little sports bottle, he has been flat out since. My DP came back from work just as he was coming out of the shower and tried to play peepo with him under his towel, DS was smiling and playing along, holding the towel over his face about to pull it down to peepo but then suddenly fell asleep under the towel. Sad

I am really worried that he was sick when his problem was so clearly respiratory before, could he have a virus that is spreading? I am taking him to the doctors tomorrow definitely (unless he wakes up with a dramatic improvement) but I am worried that it could be something like meningitis and that maybe I should contact out of hours or take him to the hospital? My DP thinks he just needs to sleep it off. I do have a habit of Googling things and getting a bit paranoid. He is sleeping soundly right now so part of me thinks he might have a point, the other part is thinking 'what if'.

Sorry if this is rambly, I am tired and worried.

Agree with calling 111. My dd2 had identical symptons to your lo, coughing, temp, vomiting, lethargy. I ended up getting a quick GP appointment (day time) and she ended up calling an ambulance. Turns out it was a severe double ear & throat infection (they suspected sepsis) but honestly as soon as the antibiotics did their thing she was as right as rain. I know it's a gut churning horror but as soon as your lo gets the correct meds etc they will be much better for it. Thinking of you and wishing a speedy recovery x

Cherry78 · 04/04/2017 04:42

Hope all is okay and you have managed to get some professional medical advice.

greathat · 04/04/2017 16:23

How is he?

PowerPantsRule · 04/04/2017 16:37

Agree with all...it's the lethargy that strikes me as the problem. How is he now?

PeachyImpeachment · 04/04/2017 17:53

I think he needs to be seen now if he has been that sleep, hard to rouse and confused. Don't wait until tomorrow.

randomer · 04/04/2017 18:37

get the wee guy seen......then you can both rest

Bettercallsaul1 · 04/04/2017 18:43

What happened, OP? How is your son now? I hope you are not as worried as last night.

gandalf456 · 04/04/2017 19:41

I would ring them. Might be an infection

Chickendipper12 · 04/04/2017 20:57

Hope dc is well op =(xx

springflowers11 · 04/04/2017 22:19

I don't think it would hurt to ring for advice.i am not sure why you kept pressing food on a child who didn't want to eat- no wonder he vomited!.
Just so long as he is getting enough fluids.
the only thing that would concern me here is if you could not the not being able to distract him at all with something he is usually very interested in

DesperatelySeeking2016 · 04/04/2017 23:05

How is he? I hope you took him to the drs and everything is ok.

JonesyAndTheSalad · 05/04/2017 00:07

Does he rouse when you wake him?

thethoughtfox · 05/04/2017 08:49

Remember they don't need to eat when they are unwell. In fact, like us, they are seem to know if it will make them sick. As they keep drinking water and/ or milk. Those rehydration sachets make a good drink too.

PetyrBaelish · 05/04/2017 19:39

Hello, yes we took him to the drs, thank you to all who gave me advice the other night.

He saw a children's nurse who said it was a just viral infection. He is still only awake to flop/cuddle for a few hours of the day though, and his throat seems to be getting sorer and sorer because now he will only take the occasional sip of water and won't let anything else in his mouth. I had to force feed him Calpol tonight, which was horrible. I bought him some Paediasure hoping he might drink some since he hasn't eaten since a Sunday morning (apart from the soup that made him sick and the odd bite I have cajoled out of him) but he hates it.

If this continues I will take him back in because I am wondering if it might be tonsillitis or some other bad throat infection, he wouldn't let the nurse look in his mouth properly so his throat wasn't thoroughly checked.

Take him back! Poor boy sounds really poorly :(

PetyrBaelish · 05/04/2017 19:51

I know re "as long as he's drinking", but I think because I am watching him so low on energy and sleeping all the time I keep trying (not forcing) him. He was only sick that once when he had a high fever and the nurse said that was the reason, not because of me, springflowers.

Sweetpotatoaddict · 05/04/2017 19:51

He's getting worse rather than better op. When did he last wee? I would take him back, make sure you are clear with who assesses him what you are concerned about.
Poor wee thing and poor you, they are such a worry when unwell.

PetyrBaelish · 05/04/2017 19:56

Yes I will. They will really struggle to check him though, he absolutely clamps his jaw shut and thrashes about. At least it doesn't seem to be anything as serious as I was worrying the other night, though.

PetyrBaelish · 05/04/2017 19:58

He is still in nappies, he it is today he stopped drinking as much so he was still giving me wet ones this evening. I will see how he is tonight.

DoItTooJulia · 05/04/2017 20:19

Ah, Petyr your gut is telling you he is unwell and it is going on a long time. Take him back. Don't faff about, pack a bag and take him in. He isn't well and a doctor needs to see him, and soon. Honestly.

Tidypidy · 05/04/2017 20:21

Have you tried him with an ice lolly or jelly? Something to take his fancy might help.

3luckystars · 05/04/2017 20:22

Did someone check his throat?

cestlavielife · 05/04/2017 20:23

Take him back and insist on seeing a doctor. If you go In the morning to gp they can send to urgent referral paed clinic

cestlavielife · 05/04/2017 20:25

Take a shawl so you can wrap him and his limbs so they can check his throat . You hold him across you so his legs behind and arms wrapped. So he can thrash. It doctor can force a look at throat

nearlyfinishednearlystarted · 05/04/2017 20:31

What is his temperature doing now? If you are worried about him and you don't think he is making any improvement just go in. Try and syringe 5mls of water in every 15 mins or so, keep an eye out for any changes/rashes etc and response to you.
