Calpol and ibuprofen - long term use on a 5 month old

Hi everyone
I'm in need of some advice.

My poor 5 month old DS has been teething since 3.5 months. 4 teeth coming through at once! 3 of these being back molars. It's totally not the order they are meant to be coming through at and the poor mite is really struggling.

I've tried everything under the sun including teething rings, frozen breast milk lollies, bonjela, teething granules, cold wet linen cloth to chew on. You name lit, I've tried it .
The only things that really help him are calpol and ibuprofen. I only use one at a time and stick to the stated doses but this has been ongoing for 1.5 months now and I normally have to medicate him most days.

I've recently started only giving him one type of painkiller per 24 hours so his system gets a 24 hour break from each one but I'm so worried all this is going to cause him long term damage .

He will usually need a dose when he wakes up in the morning (or he won't feed) and the same just before bed (or else he won't go down at all)

I can usually distract him through out the day with the aforementioned other remedies and dispite a very grumpy boy, it just about works.

Am I doing him long term damage by giving him one of these meds every day for 1.5 months?? Has anyone tried anything else that's worked for them?

Go to the GP and get advice. Plenty of babies have to be on long term analgesia, it's not going to have harmed your baby. Agree it's not ideal though and it is very unusual for teething to cause that much pain for so long.

Anbesol liquid is great for this. Defo the liquid not the gel as the gel they tend to push out with their tongue and the liquid soaks straight in. It totally numbs their mouths so instant relief. Can be used regularly throughout the day too Smile

How did it go with the gp? Hope he's feeling a bit better.

Thank you. He's still feeling sorry for himself. Doctor was about as much use as knickers on an Avocado. But I wasn't expecting miracles as my surgery is shocking. Definitely changing surgeries now.
She didn't seem to think it would do any harm as he's not taking the maximum daily dose. She did suggest we see a dentist as it's unusual for 3 back molars to be appearing in someone so young. Guess I'd better go register us at a dentist. Hmm

Sorry batteries just seen your post. He's combination fed but mainly boob. He does use me as a human dummy usually. It's his only way to soothe but its less painful for him to bottle feed some express or formula.

Can you actually see the molars coming through? Seriously if he's using you as a dummy, how are you 100% certain it isn't something else like reflux or tongue tie?

StrawberryShortcake32 · 08/03/2017 22:53

The tooth on the left you can see coming in. The others on the right can be felt. When you touch them he goes crazy. Both midwife and HV have both commented on his feeding in the past, how his latch is good and he seems like a natural feeder. He also rarely spits up or vomits.

Mine didn't spit up or vomit - they had silent reflux....
also once the teeth start to come through ie you can see them, the pain of teething usually goes quickly?

StrawberryShortcake32 · 09/03/2017 15:50

He has no symptoms of silent reflux.
I don't claim to be an expert on teething but I am an expert where DS is concerned. There's no denying that he is teething. The pain has gone in one of the back molars as it's now come through, it's the molar the other side and the front tooth that are the issue now. I can feel those teeth when I put bonjela on but they haven't broken the gum yet.

Hey im currently in the same situation with my little one so know exactly how you feel I can see the tooth so it is definitely that. It's awful seeing her in pain and I've tried everything the only thing that helps is calpol. Fingers crossed everything settles soon :)
